"It's time to celebrate the contributions of the millions of quilters who have used their creativity to bring beauty into our daily lives. Although quilting as a form of artistic expression has gained recognition in recent years, its artistic value would have been recognized decades ago if it wasn't primarily a pastime of women. We honor the love, dedication and creativity of quilters of the past who, often with no more than scraps to work with and little encouragement, produced works of art that enriched our daily lives," said Gina Walters of the International Color Institute.
"Now with a tip of the hat to today's quilters and legend Freddy Moran, we declare that "Red is a Neutral". We also introduce a new color 'Freddy Red' for 2019."
Here's a delightful Self-Portrait by "Red IS a Neutral" Freddy Moran. The quilt was part of the New Quilts of Northern California exhibit sponsored by the Northern California Quilt Council at the Pacific International Quilt Festival 2013.
Quilted by Judy Irish, it contains everything from beads to hidden messages and prairie points. Take a closer look.
MJ writes about Char #4: "Years ago, an image of a lovely crystal arrived in my mailbox. That little gem not only caught my attention, it grabbed hold of my soul. In doing so, it launched a journey that has enriched my life. May you experience as much joy in viewing them as I have had in creating them."

Title of Quilt: Sun for Kathy
Quilter's Name: Miroslawa Pucek
Location: Wielkopolska, Poland
Hello, my name is Mirosława Maria Pucek. I live in Poland (Europe) - my city is Środa Wielkopolska. I really like sewing. My grandmother, my mother, my sister and her daughter were sewing in my family. I started Sewing from dolls' clothes, clothes for myself, my husband and children. I made a patchwork patch in 2013 - for my granddaughter. I participate in international exchange for the first time. Neck for Kathy McKernan - team 406. We talked about our families, about our passions (except sewing), about Christmas customs. Together, we've fixed the colors (blue, gray and yellow) and the Churn Dash pattern, the rest is a disaster. Patchwork for Kathy was made in December 2017. Greetings to all who love patchworks. I'm sorry I do not know English (translator).
Title of Quilt: Sing a Happy Song
Quilter's Name: Kathy McKernan
Location: Rock, Michigan, USA
The opportunity to be paired with a quilter from Poland was exciting. The fact that she spoke no English and I spoke no Polish added to the intrigue! Through online interpreter programs we were able to communicate in a basic manner, keeping things simple as it relates to the exchange project. We agreed on the colors, that it would be a traditional patchwork design and it would feature the churn dash block. The rest was to be our creativity and personalities. The thrill has been similar to what I experienced back in elementary school when presented with an opportunity to have a pen pal from a foreign country! I am amazed at the beautiful work of my partner and her family and friends as viewed on Facebook and Instagram. Over the holidays she shared the details of their holiday customs and I was struck by the continuity of their culture of which I was shamefully ignorant. Being paired with a partner from Poland sparked an interest in their history and travel in that general area. What a great experience to give/receive a quilt to remember this experience. It turns out that we were both worried about the same things - the biggest being, will she like my quilt? And we agreed that we would, because it is part of the experience!
This beautiful appliqué quilt, Espalier by Joann Webb, with its arbor full of colorful birds is a treat for the eyes. We particularly love all of the details in the birds and the interesting border treatment, which is something we've never seen before.
MJ Kinman's quilt, Communion, got its name when it was baptized, by accident, with a little bit of red wine. You can hear the whole story in Show 2407.
