Since 1982, Julie Silber has been the curator of the world renowned Esprit Quilt Collection in San Francisco and is the co-author of the critically acclaimed books, Hearts and Hands and Amish: The Art of the Quilt.  The remodeled Wine warehouse in San Francisco housed the offices of Esprit as well as the famous quilt collection.  Visitors could tour the quilts even as business was going on.  It was here that Alex started her love affair with all things Amish.

Click on the picture to start the show that features the Esprit collection with some lessons on Amish quilts from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

We know your guild will love Julie's lectures and demonstrations.  Take a look at this list of lectures.  Click Here

Caryl Bryer Fallert (in her studio) shared a few tips with my class.

I'm currently in Paducah, KY - no, not for the show - it was over last week. Then there was the drive to Maryland to present the Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar in Frederick (yeah) and that is where Libby broke her ankle. Now I'm BACK in Paducah teaching at the National Quilt Museum - formerly the Museum of the American Quilter's Society.

The 12 students have been fantastic. Yesterday we were invited to have lunch in the home of Caryl Bryer Fallert and she gave the group a personal tour of her fantastic home and studio. Then, after class, Caryl and I had a great Italian dinner downtown. Usually I only get to visit with Caryl when we are in crowds so, to have an evening together sharing ideas and thoughts was awesome.

If you could have an evening with ANY quilter (Alex and myself excluded) - who would it be, and what would you enjoy discussing?

The Rock and Roll Hall of fame was built by famed architect I.M. Pei.  There is a huge collection of guitars, clothes and pictures, but my favorite parts were the listening stations and the short movies.  I spent most of my time on the early era, so here is your test.  Figure out who is the inductee based on the letters and hints given:

1. T __ __        T __ __ __ t __ t __ __ __ __           Hint:  Ice Cream Sundae

2.  __ __ u __ k       __ e __  r  __                       Hint:  straw.., rasp.., blue..

3.  L __ s        P __ __ l                                  Hint:  Inventor, musician, genius

4.  __ r __ __      __ __ a p __ __ n             Hint: Some people put _______ in their coffee.

The Great Lakes Science Center was my first stop.  It had a lot of hands on science exhibits and a wonderful IMAX movie on the Great Lakes.  Here are your next 2 Questions:

1866_great_lakes_map.jpg

What percentage of the world's fresh water are held in the Great Lakes?

a.  5%        b.  10%       c.  20%

1866_p1030170.jpg

Here is a bowl with a hole in the bottom.  When you lower the bowl in the water the water flows into the bowl and it begins to sink.  Here is your question:

As the bowl fills up, does it sink faster or slower?

I will put the answers in the comments, but don't cheat--give your answers first.

After the Super Seminar in Maryland, Alex & I (Capt'n John) visited Cleveland, Ohio. Alex had a fun day with the customers and friends of Abigayle's Quiltery (Bernina) and sent me to explore Cleveland. Cleveland is a wonderful city with an interesting setup for it's entertainment attractions. The locations of the attractions are very close together. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Cleveland Browns Football Stadium and the Great Lakes Science Center are right next to each other. The Cleveland Indians Baseball Stadium is within a mile from the others.  There are a lot of music venues around the town including a World Famous Orchestra.

Over the rest of the day I will have a series of questions and tests for you. Here is the first:

This was one of my first trips to the Eastern Part of the United States and I was embarrassed to realize that I did not know without looking the answer to this question:

Is Cleveland west or east of Chicago, and which Great Lake is each located on?

Our International guests get a pass on this question, but how did our United States viewers who don't live in the area do?

The Ricky Tims Super Seminar in Frederick, Maryland is now over. The people were wonderful to meet and the volunteers were great! When the seminar was over and the trailer was packed, Justin took us to Gettysburg, where, in July 1863, one of the worst battles of the civil war was fought. Over a period of three days, there were a total of 51,000 casualties (dead, injured, missing).

1863_p1030120.jpg

Along with tour guides dressed in period clothes, we went on a night Ghost walk to areas of Gettysburg that were involved in the battles. One spot was near the cemetary. I (Capt'n John) used the same camera in the picture above and the picture below. It was taken in total darkness with a flash aimed at the forest near the cemetary. The photo is not retouched and I don't have any answer for what it shows.1863_p1030133.jpg

On the walk, Ricky took pictures of the Witness Tree. This is a tree that President Lincoln touched with both hands and said that it was a witness to the events of the battle. It was during this visit that Abraham Lincoln would deliver one of the the most famous speeches in US history - 269 words in ten sentences - the Gettysburg Address. Ricky told us he saw future quilt designs in the picture below.

Ricky, Alex, and Libby Lehman in her wheelchair and temporary cast.

Libby Lehman (episode 112) broke her ankle this past weekend -yes, that's true! However, instead of us telling you how it happened (and we WILL... and those of you who know, shhh...please don't give it away) we want you to spin a yarn and tell us a super story about what might have happened to cause this super quilter to be confined to crutches. We'll spill the beans in an upcoming newsletter and blog but until then, it's up to you to entertain TQS with your wit and humor. Let the party begin.
