In June 2009 Alex was invited to Costa Rica by her good friends Maria Teresa and Rocio of El Costurero Quilt Shop in San Jose, Costa Rica. Maria Teresa and Rocio pioneered quilting in Costa Rica. Alex gave a (translated) all day seminar on quilting to 300+ quilters and had quilts in a special show. The TV show "Buen Dia" came and filmed her at the store with the wonderful local students. The video is in Spanish.
Thursday night in Houston Alex celebrated Maria Teresa's birthday. Happy birthday to a quilting pioneer.
So what's a quilter to do with all those t-shirts? Why pants of course!! You never know what you are going to find at the Houston Quilt Show.
Consummate teacher, Jan Krentz, comes to TQS to keep you on the right track. She talks tips, techniques, tools and more in this series of short lessons. Jan is the first in our series of guest teachers.
Most of the lessons will be for our Star members. Don't worry, unlike other websites, it's included in your membership dues. Stay with us this next year and we promise you will be a better quilter.
After Jan will be lessons on machine quilting and transferring pictures to fabric. Everything will be short and clear so you can get right back to quilting with your new skills.
So where did Alex and Capt'n John go on their day off between Market and Festival? Alex always likes to test the local transit system and off we went to the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. The METRO Rail is less than a mile from the Convention Center and a short walk from our hotel. Just six stops down is the Museum district and the Fine Arts Museum. But one stop before is the Wheeler Station, and from there it is a short walk to the Craft Center at 4848 Main Street.
Thank you to Mary Headrick, Communications Director, for allowing us to bring you a taste of the Fiber Art exhibit currently running. If you are in Houston for the Quilt Show, make sure to visit the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. It's an easy ride, an interesting exhibit and a fun store.
Beginning Thursday, PIQF will begin in Santa Clara, California, USA. It's the Pacific International Quilt Festival presented by Mancuso Show Management. It was a big night for quilting at the annual IQA award show. We just returned from the ceremony, and our heads are still swimming after seeing each and every winning quilt revealed. The variety, skill, and creativity were astounding. Here are a few of the winning quilts we wanted to share with you.
Stay tuned for lots more quilts, fun, and excitement as we share with you more from the International Quilt Festival.

The Quilts are amazing this year. We are taking pictures as fast as we can. We even got written permission to move under the barriers to get you the close ups you need to see the techniques. Sometimes we don't even notice the names of the artists, but as we looked down on this quilt we saw the name of TQS member Pat Durbin. So here is a teaser look at a great quilt. Great job, Pat!
While our TQS film crew was in New York City filming Paula Nadelstern earlier this year, we spent time some in Soho and the Garment District. Follow us along for a tour of visual delights in two very creative neighborhoods of New York. Be sure to see Paula's tour of the Garment District in Show 508: Paula at the American Folk Art Museum.
