You might think that since I'm pretty tight with Alex that she would have just sent me her new 4 n 1 tool. However, it finally dawned on me that most of you are pretty tight with her too - so she'd have to send you all one - and I know that's not really possible. So, I bit the bullet and went to her website and got my very own 4 n 1 Essential (I like that word) Sewing Tool. But, if you want to know the really cool part - I put a comment in about Alex being so cute and all - and I got an hand-written reply on my package slip. That's right! Alex wrote me a personal message. Now, if you get a 4 n 1 tool, I wonder if you'll get that sort of special treatment? Is it okay to gloat?

Choosing colors when creating quilt can be a daunting task.  We all know that shading and value are important parts of what makes a quilt successful, but does color make a ruler successful? There are frosted rulers and clear rulers, yellow lines, green lines, black lines and red lines, how do you decide which ruler to use? Does the color of the fabric make a difference when selecting the colors on your ruler? Do you have a particular size ruler that seems to work for any project?  How many rulers do you have?  TQS wants to hear what you have to say about rulers, just submit a comment and talk to us about rulers.

If you'd like more information about rulers, take a look at what Jan Krentz has to say about ruler selection by clicking here.

Tino and Coco

Great guesses everyone! The secret ingredient in Earnest's ribs is whiskey, but also garlic jelly. One of the best parts of the evening was meeting Jude's new puppies. Valentino and Coco. Since I had to tell the secret to the ribs, I took this as an opportunity to post the pups pics. Of course, these two puppies have joined a bigger brother and sister already at the house - two great pyreneese, Ella and Miles - that would be Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. Of course there's a ratio for quilters who have dogs vs. the quilters who have cats. Judith has that ratio at her house too. So, if Jude has four dogs - how many cats does she have?

pinDid you know that during the revolutionary war there was a shortage of pins? Well that certainly isn't the case today. There are flat button head pins, applique pins, flower head pins, fork pins, glass head pins, patchwork pins, fine patchwork pins, quilting pins...and you get the idea. TQS wants to know what pins do you use for your quilting and why do you use them? Do you use different pins if you hand piece than you do if you machine piece? Do you use your pins for an application other than the application for which they are made? For example, using applique pins to hold the fabric to the paper when paper-piecing because they are smaller and don't get in the way.

Please submit a comment and let us know. We are on pins and needles here.

And by the way, how many pin cushions do YOU have?

Judith Baker Montano called to invite Justin and I over for some of Ernest's famous ribs! Would you say no? Just look at the spread! Interestingly enough, that table is sitting right on the spot where a pony was once living. Several years ago the house was a total derelict - a shelter for a pony. Now it's the perfect Victorian cottage.

Jude graciously gave me a copy of her new book, Fabric Montage. I got to share the progress of this book as Jude was writing it. I knew it would be special, but the final result surpasses special - it is AMAZING!. Check it out! Not only did she put about five book's worth of information, but the photography is beyond inspirational. You gotta get her book!

Jude will be featured in the first issue of The Quilt Life (the new magazine that Alex and I are doing with AQS). She has appeared in two TQS episodes - 201 and 507.

Okay, back to the ribs. What do you think the secret ingredient is in Ernest's famous rib sauce? And, if you don't have a guess, what is the secret ingredient in your sauce?

If you live on the West Coast and can't get to Washington D.C. to see the Behind the Scenes Lace/Quilt Tours mentioned in the January 19th Newsletter, maybe you can visit the Lace Museum and Guild in Sunnyvale, California.

Their mission is to preserve lace and the art of lace making, to exhibit lace and its historical use, and to offer instruction in all facets of lace making. The museum is a non-profit organization and is one of two museums in the United States devoted solely to its art. The Lace Museum provides on-going lace making classes and is staffed entirely by volunteers.

A new exhibit, "Night and Day - Lacey Lingerie and Sleepwear from 1860-1950" will be installed January 23, 2010. The exhibit will feature petticoats, hoops, corsets, corset covers, slips, night wear, bed jackets, teddies and more.

Admission is free.

For more information, please visit, www.thelacemuseum.org.
