This week TQS is bringing you a new format for the Top 100 Puzzle.  There are all types of options you can try. Some of which will make you absolutely crazy.  You can change the shape and difficulty of the puzzle pieces by selecting Change Cut.  You can also shuffle the pieces or have it solve the puzzle for you.  As always, there is a timer. Good Luck.

Want to try it in the old puzzle style? Emma Craig -The Garden

2916_puzzle_old_format.jpg

The Garden was created in 1933 by Josephine (Emma) Craig and is 86" x 85".  Josephine earned national fame in the 1930s when she won the 1936 Eastern States Exposition held in Storrowton, Mass.  It was one of the first national quilt contests.  It was inspired by an antique quilt described in Ruth Finley's 1929 book,  Old Patchwork Quilts and the Women Who Made Them, as "the acme of the art of applique."  At the Kansas State Fair it was rated by the judges as "100-percent perfect."

The quilt is currently part of the collection of the Kansas State Historical Society.

I took some time to make a small art-type quilt (whoo-hoo!) and thought I would share the result with you.

Lifelines II was totally improvised and utilizes my "Quilting Caveman Style" method which means there were no rulers, no quarter-inch seams, no measuring, and no templates! Of course, the fabrics are hand-dyed in the bright colors I love so much. It is quilted with Rainbow thread by Superior, in particular the one called Carnival.

This quilt is about 40" x 30" and it now belongs to one of my best friends (Susan) in my hometown of Wichita Falls, TX. See a detail of this quilt here.

As for myself - my least favorite part of quilting is the binding - perhaps it is my impatient nature (it always makes me smile when people say, "oh you must be so patient to quilt") that makes this part so painful. Opposites attract, because my daughter recently finished this quilt for a friend and found herself LOVING this part of the process - go figure. Now it is your turn to chime in -

As you learned earlier, Ronda Beyer, a Gammill artist, and her collaborative quilting partner Gail Stepanek just won Best of Show at AQS Knoxville with their quilt, Star Berries.

Ronda says, "We are both over the moon excited about this win... This is the 2nd Best of Show win with this quilt which has also been juried into Houston this fall."

Ronda will be taping with TQS this August and plans to bring the quilt with her to the taping to share with everyone.  In the meantime, here is a close up of one of Ronda's other quilts.

Congratulations to TQS Member, machla! Her name was randomly drawn to win the $50 Gift Certificate from Superior Threads in last week's Weekend Fun contest.  In case you missed it, Bob the Thread Guy has a great video where he defines Staples, Egyptian, and Mercerized threads. Is Egyptian cotton thread really from Egypt?  Click on the video to find out.

Sisters Quilt

Congratulations to MaterialChick whose entry If van Gogh were a Quilter: Starry Night Over Sisters, took 2nd place in the 2010 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show theme contest: Stars over Sisters.

Here's what she has to say about her award-winning quilt, "I was inspired by van Gogh's painting Starry Night. I included the Three Sisters mountains above a stylized town of Sisters, Oregon and the surrounding agricultural area. The larger building represents the Stitchin' Post, a local quilt shop. The tall trees represent Ponderosa Pines, and I made the smaller, 3-D trees with thread painting. To create the swoosh in the sky I used 4 colors of Sulky Holoshimmer threads (hand sewn) and 6 colors of weaving thread (bobbin work) I bought in Guatemala. Some of the mountain details are thread painted."

Did you know you could search for other award winning quilts in the Quilt Gallery? Just click on Quilt Gallery, then click on Advanced Search, you'll see a box for Award Winning Quilts? Check that box and hit submit; you'll see all the quilts in the gallery that have won quilting awards.  It's that easy!
