There are many reasons for the popularity of HBO's "Game of Thrones."  The first thing that comes to mind is probably not the costumes, but it should be.  The detail work in these clothes makes each one a singular masterpiece of design with unbelievable handwork, embroidery and embellishment. With the Summer Olympics in Rio just around the corner, we thought we'd revisit the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Hoffman California Fabrics worked with designer Linda Ambrosini to create this lovely quilt, featuring 29 different batik fabrics, based on the patchwork banners and the eye-catching uniforms of the athletes. The quilt measures 50" x 74." The pattern for "When Bali Meets Sochi" is available as a free download. Please be sure to set your printer to "actual size" to ensure that your templates are accurate.

Last week the girlfriends and I headed over the mountains and through the fields...past several wineries and arrived at the most perfect stitching spot in the world...Crabapple Hill Studios the creation of Meg Hawkey in Benton City, Washington. Set in an agricultural area of Eastern Washington Crabapple Hill Studios is filled with all things quilts and embroidery designed entirely by Meg. It is a design studio and not a quilt shop, so is not open to the public. The way you get to enter this special place is by signing up for the 8 different workshop/retreats. Two sessions are offered back to back in each of the 4 seasons.

There is a waiting list but it is worth putting you name on the list as life gets in the way sometimes and the waiting list is very fluid. My girlfriends and I are already signed up for the Oct. 2017 waiting list. We want to experience this event with a Halloween flavor. As attendees we were treated like best friends. Meg and her crew made sure our every needs were met. It was so fun meeting and stitching with women from around the country.

Plus, learning the technique for coloring your embroidery projects, specialty stitches and the ingredients of every dish we were fed, LOL. I hope you enjoy the slide show! There will be an interview with Meg on The Quilt Roadie You Tube Channel this week and stay tuned for more photos on www.wooliemammoth.blogspot.com

This is a time-lapse video using 83 photos of a wood quilt as it was created by Fraser Smith. It was made between September 2011 and February 2012. If you have ever seen one of Fraser's works, you will be astounded at what it takes to create a single quilt and by how realistic it looks.  See the finished quilt below.
