Debra Goley created Taking Flight: My Great Aunts for the HERstory: A Celebration of Strong Women exhibit. Her aunts both served in WW II as pilots and are both still living. That's one of them in the video with Debra. Debra talks about her quilt and we salute the women she commemorated.

Her two aunts are Betty Heinrich Berkstresser and Barbara Willis Heinrich.

Deb writes,

Here is my highlight! Getting to celebrate with my Aunt, Betty Heinrich Berkstresser, a WWII veteran, a Women Air Force Pilot was the best treat! I was honored to show her my art work of her and my other great Aunt both still living! Only 83 of the 1000 WASPS still alive and both my Aunts received the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2011. People came up to thank them for their service and my tears were of joy.

While the colors are vibrant and help the quilt tell a story, the visual impact of the quilt had people stopping and staring. It made you feel like you were looking through a pipeline in the ocean. Thom Atkins quilt, Water is Life, So Why are We Doing This, is a commentary on what we are doing to our oceans. That's why he used interesting embellishments, including distressed plastic, to create something that was "Beautiful" and "Terrifying".

Thom's quilt won Best Use of Color and 2nd Place Visual Impact (New Quilts of Northern California) at PIQF 2018.

Do you suffer from fear of flying geese? Those bias pieces, getting the point with the quarter inch seam at the top, making sure the point is centered... they can be downright scary.

We have the answer! Eleanor Burns' flying geese tools from Quilt In A Day make it easy to make perfect flying geese, without even measuring.

The Flying Geese Ruler makes 1.5 x 3 inch and 3 x 6 inch finished flying geese. It's small, portable and simple to use. Just line up the triangle lines on the ruler with the 45 degree sewn lines and trim the block to the size of the ruler and, voila, perfect flying geese!

Calling All Geese Template & Modern Migration Quilt Pattern

The Calling All Geese Ruler is an easy and convenient multi-size tool to make flying geese in 8 sizes ranging from 1 x 2 inches to 5 x 10 inches. It works in steps, and to use it you simply line your block up to successive markings on the template and trim. Three fast and simple steps later you have a perfect block. Plus, you get the Modern Migration Quilt pattern with your purchase of the Calling All Geese Ruler!

We weren't surprised to see Rami Kim's enchanting ensemble win the BERNINA 1st Runner Up award at PIQF. She used a beautiful silk brocade that she'd been cherishing for a very long time. She found it so beautiful, she even used some of the wrong side of the fabric. She also used three different fabric folding techniques to create the hexagons in the design. Enjoy Spring's Kiss, Hexie Bliss: A Stroll Through Peach Tree Island.

Rami shows you some of her fabric folding techniques in Show 607: Folded Fabric Elegance.

Pretty Flaky is a bit more traditional quilt than you might be used to seeing by Susan. Of course, following her own tradition, it's also an award-winner.

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael and Hurricane Florence, the nonprofit Quilt Alliance is offering quilt owners a small step towards recovery. The Quilt Alliance is providing Quilt Recovery Kits to those affected by these natural disasters.

The Quilt Alliance, founded in 1993, works with individuals and groups to document, preserve and share the rich history of quilts and their makers.

Alliance board president Michael Newman said, "We aim to support, celebrate and commemorate the quilt community, and we are deeply concerned for those impacted by the storm and wanted a way to help. Houses can slowly be rebuilt, but the precious and personal physical objects that are often destroyed by these disasters impact families profoundly. Stories of quilts lost (or salvaged) from natural disasters are frequently the focus of our oral history projects."

Here is the webpage on their site for those who would like to request a free kit:

https://quiltalliance.org/projects/quilt-recovery-kit/

The Quilt Alliance partners with Newman's company, StoryPatches, as well as Retro Clean and Moda Fabrics to create a Quilt Recovery Kit to offer to anyone who has had a quilt damaged in a natural disaster like Hurricane Michael.

Larry Gonzales of Retro Clean says, "We are happy to be at least a small part of the recovery process for distraught families."

Each kit includes:
  • A 4 oz. sample of Retro Clean, a stain-removing soaking agent for quilts and all washable fabrics,
  • Two all-cotton, sew-on Quilt Survivor labels for quilts,
  • Cleaning and labeling instructions,
  • An invitation to share the story of your quilt. We will feature Survivor quilts online with the owner's permission.

Anyone who has experienced damage to a quilt due to a natural disaster is encouraged to register via this form

Please Note: A limited number of kits are available. If you'd like to make a donation to support the shipping costs of the Quilt Recovery kits, please visit the Quilt Alliance website: www.quiltalliance.org/projects/quilt-recovery-kit/

RNK Precision Point Turner

Have you ever carefully traced an appliqué piece on fabric, but when you were finished you found that the fabric had slipped and now your circular appliqué piece is an oval? We hate that!!

Now we have The Best workaround - The Best Sandboard. Recommended to us by Becky Goldsmith as a helpful tool for the appliqué portion of our 2019 Block Of The Month SIZZLE, The Best Sandboard is a sturdy board with a surface of extra-fine sandpaper that grips your fabric as you write, draw, or trace on it, keeping it from sliding around and ensuring that your traced shapes do not become distorted from slippage.

The Best Sandboard also works great to hold your fabric in place for writing on, drawing on, or embellishing fabric!
