Collector and author Bill Volckening shares the story behind a very bright polyester quilt from the 1970s in this Go Tell It at the Quilt Show! video from the Quilt Alliance. It's construction is quite unique.
One quilt, one person, one video camera, three minutes = another quilt story saved! Go Tell It at the Quilt Show! is a Quilt Alliance project designed to capture the stories of quilts where quiltmakers gather. Bill Volckening was interviewed during QuiltCon 2015 in Austin, Texas.

While Ricky was visiting the AQS Daytona Beach 2019 show, he took photos of some of the fabulous award-winning quilts, including Rejoice by Molly Y. Hamilton-McNally. Molly's quilt won the Best Movable Machine Workmanship Award. This is not the first time this quilt has won an award. It won the same award at AQS Virginia Beach 2018 and also, Third Place in the Traditional Appliqué category at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2017.
Molly writes,
"In every culture, it is only human nature to gather together to celebrate and rejoice on special occasions. This is passed down through the centuries and is unique within each culture. When I first arrived in America, to my surprise, the colors red and green are significant at Christmas time whereas in Chinese culture they signify the new year and the ceremony of marriage. For me, these colors in my quilt represent happy times again and again."

The kickoff of National Quilting Day 2019 will be held at The National Quilt Museum on Saturday, March 16th at 10am CST. The public is invited to attend and the doors will open at 9:45am. The museum is located at 215 Jefferson Street in downtown Paducah, Kentucky and free parking is available in the museum's lot and the large adjacent public parking lot. The event is free and visitors are invited to stay and enjoy the museum galleries afterward.
This year, quilters around the world will be able to watch the event via live stream on The National Quilt Museum's Facebook page. To watch the event, go to https://www.facebook.com/NationalQuiltMuseum/. Very high viewership is expected, so viewers are advised to please log on a few minutes early. The event is expected to run approximately 30 minutes.
National Quilt Museum CEO Frank Bennett is excited about streaming the event live this year: "National Quilting Day is the day we honor our wonderful community and celebrate the art of quilting. I want every quilter to be able to experience this live."
National Quilting Day is the annual celebration of quilters and quilting. Taking place the third Saturday of March every year, National Quilting Day is the one universal celebration of all things quilt. The National Quilting Association launched the celebration in 1992. The event is now a partnership between The National Quilt Museum and the Quilt Alliance, two of the largest nonprofit organizations serving the needs of the quilting community. The National Quilting Day Kickoff Event marks the beginning of an entire day of quilt-related activities by organizations and individuals nationwide. Events and programs to date have included service projects, exhibits, quilt documentation days, and spreading the word about quilting through social media, websites, and other communication.

Seven years in the making, A-Round with My Friends was a round-robin quilt that Barbara just felt needed to be bigger, so she added additional appliqué. She was right, and the quilt won Best of Show at her guild show and then was selected to be in 500 Traditional Quilts by Karey Patterson Bresenhan.

Location: Rovaniemi, Finland
I began to make my little quilt to lovely, accomplished and talented quilter Kathy from Florida in early fall 2017. When I look at the quilt today, months later, it surprises me, how different it is than if I had made it for myself, this quilt is for Kathy. Once I settled on the house theme, I knew I had to find Finnish fabric. The background is hand dyed by a Finnish quilter and the main print is by Marimekko – it could not be more Finnish than that. I live far up north, little bit above the Arctic Circle, and my surroundings and seasons often creep into my makings. The two moments I love most up here are the magic of May, when white nights once again return after the harsh winter, and the first snow in the fall. I was making the quilt when the first snow came. Once the snow comes, the sun goes; our deep winter is dark and cold, life settles inside the houses, they look inviting and cozy in the arctic winter. My quilt catches the moment of the first snow. Sometimes white snowflakes are like crocheted doilies when they fall quietly down. There is hand applique, embroidery, little bit of crochet, beading and then both machine and hand quilting on the quilt. I hope Kathy likes it.

Quilting has been an amazing journey for me. From my first quilting class in 1992 in Indianapolis, IN, my life has been blessed. I have moved around frequently and quilting has been a constant in my life. Joining a guild or small group in a new city offers friendship, learning opportunities and a sense of belonging. For 25 years a friend in the Netherlands and I have been exchanging blocks, letters and inspiration. When the IMQE offered to pair me with Leena, a new friend from Finland, I jumped at the chance. It has been incredible to learn how different and similar we are. She lives in a harsh climate above the Arctic Circle and I live in sunny Florida. Leena has been to the USA as an exchange student and has also visited Florida. We both have daughters – her oldest daughter will get married this year. I can’t wait to see the wedding quilt Leena will make for her. Thanks to Google Earth I have seen her house with the red roof. It is a small world indeed. Leena and I both love hand embroidery and wool so my quilt has both. I have never seen the Northern Lights but I know she has and I wanted to include that in my small quilt. What a beautiful display during those cold dark nights. I hope Leena will love the little quilt I made for her and think of me when she sees it.
