Today we continue our selection of quilts recently displayed at the Spring Paducah 2019 show featured as part of The 14th Quilt Nihon Exhibition.
Capt'n John --"This exhibit was a constant surprise to me. With every quilt you had to get closer to realize what amazing work was done. I loved the birds flying...then I realized that this is a log cabin quilt!...then I saw the creative quilting design (on a log cabin?)...then, hey wait -- is this embellished....?
The exhibit is described as:
"Organized by the Japan Handicraft Instructors' Association, the Quilt Nihon Exhibition is one of the most prestigious international quilt contests in Japan. The exhibit features 42 quilts from the "Innovative Traditional" category, which will later be exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art."
Please enjoy the third quilt from the exhibition by Mikiyo Sugimoto.
Title of Quilt: Flight
Quilter's Name: Mikiyo Sugimoto
Dimensions: 90" x 68"
Laura at SewVeryEasy came up with a great way to do English Paper Piecing by machine to create an "un'bee'lievably" fun centerpiece. She used as inspiration a pattern from Annie’s Creative Quilters Fabric Club and the invaluable help of Ricky Tims' Stable Stuff Poly stabilizer.

Currently on exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is Denise Labadie: Stone Portraits and Sacred Stonescapes. TQS was lucky enough to be allowed to photograph some of Denise's stunning quilts to share with our members. If you'd like to see the exhibit in person, it runs through July 14, 2019.
Here is Monastic Ruin at Glendalough.
Labadie makes contemporary art quilt portraits of Celtic megalithic stones and monoliths, and more recent monastic ruins. These stonescapes – stone circles, standing stones, dolmens, burial tombs, abandoned churches, forgotten cemeteries, and lost-in-history portals and passageways – are both timeless and evoke deep remembrances of human pasts largely forgotten. Labadie's quilts are known both for their surprising emotionality, large size and, from a construction standpoint, their hand-painted fabrics, textures, color gradation, shadowing and perspective, depth of field, craftsmanship and technique precision.
"On my bucket list - classes with Claudia!" beadecked0999
We heard you, and now a great quilting class starts tomorrow, Claudia's (P)Fillers. This $40 DVD class will be streamed Free to Star members. Join now and be ready to improve your quilting right away.
We love Claudia Pfeil's quilts and wanted to show you how she thinks about quilting design and some of her favorite fillers. This Class is 2 hours of tips, designs, and free-motion encouragement. You get to see how Claudia's mind approaches open space and then filling in and providing background.
In this video, Claudia will teach you how to create fillers. With four different camera angles, she will guide you through different techniques and styles to create bubbles, lines, and other geometric modern textures to add dimension and visual appeal to your quilt. You don’t need to fear the filler with Claudia’s help.
We have contracted with Claudia to have this Class available for streaming online through Dec 2020. So, you have plenty of time to learn and then go back and repeat until your quilting is second nature.
Star members can access this Class starting Monday, June 24, 2019. Find it in under WATCH>Featured Guest DVDs.
In the meantime, here's a little teaser to give you some idea of what you can expect.
Flowers in my Heart
Noriko Kido
Azumino, Nagano, Japan
Artists Statement:
I love old quilts like those designed by Marie Webster. Inspired by these classics, I created my own pattern, combining flowers with a Dresden Plate.
Techniques: Hand and machine piecing, hand appliqué, hand embroidery, hand quilting, trapunto
Materials: Cotton fabric, polyester batting
Design Source: Dresden Plate Block
Look at this amazing work! We love the creativity and innovation, and it is so much fun to see how changing the fabric results in such different looks. These are just a few of the wonderful blocks that our members are sharing.

The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles allowed us to photograph a few of the quilts from the Marbaum collection. Enjoy the video below.
Discover a selection of quilts from the Marbaum Collection - a unique collection of 87 art quilts generously donated to SJMQT for its 40th anniversary - on display for the first time. Marvin and Hilary Fletcher started acquiring quilts in the early 1980’s, eventually establishing a formidable trove of works from nearly 80 artists, bearing witness to the diversity and vitality of quilt-making from that time, to the present. The Marbaum Collection is both an invaluable resource for artists and researchers to explore, and a deeply personal collection woven together by the Fletchers’ long standing passion for and philanthropic support of art quilts. The gifted collection, unprecedented in size and scope for SJMQT, will travel internationally before joining its new home in San Jose in 2020.

Here is a full look at Claudia Pfeil's new quilt, Bricks n Gears. Take a look at the construction, the colors, and the quilting. All are outstanding. Be sure to watch Claudia in Show 2413 for great tips and laughs, but first check out the new quilt.
Noriko Kido does fabulous work and she didn't disappoint in Paducah. Her quilt, Past and Future Meet, won 1st Place Hand Quilted at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah Spring 2019. While it won for hand quilting, this large quilt (86" x 86") was hand appliquéd, hand embroidered, and hand pieced. The mixture of hand appliquéd flowers with meticulously pieced spinning suns is stunning.
