This is Ruth Chandler's first quilt, Thistle Haleakala, that she made in 1991. It's a queen size, hand quilted, hand appliquéd Hawaiian quilt. Isn't that what everyone does for their first quilt?

We love the way Denise Griffiths intrepreted her native Australian flowers in her quilt, Floris Circularis, and the graphic use of the black and white semi-circle on the side. It all works together to make a spectacular quilt.

This quilt was on display as part of the Alternative Techniques exhibit at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2018.

...and not just any quilt. It became an award-winning Best of Show Quilt. But before that, the quilt colors bled. See her clever solution.

(Important Quilting Tip: Always pre-test hand dyed fabrics in your local water source.)

Imagine a world where only kindness exists...like when someone is honking at you in the drive up Starbucks and your first reaction is to pay for their coffee rather than be angry. What if, when someone cuts you off in traffic your first thought is that you hope everything turns out okay for them. There are these bits and pieces of time where the choice can be kindness rather than anger, grab kindness. It takes practice and grace to understand everyone's anger is not about you and that you can train your heart and brain to react in kindness first.

I truly believe if the entire world took up stitching it would be a more peaceful place. Whether it be hand appliqué, quilting, cross stitch, knitting, needlepoint, crochet...there is a peacefulness that embraces the heart when you are stitching. Even Rosey Grier took up needlepoint because he saw the benefits to his soul. Maybe if schools taught stitching, and in "time outs" you got to stitch, the classroom would be more peaceful. The mind boggles with the possibilities!

I leave you this week with a link for a "Free" download laced with kindness by Modern Folk Embroidery.

I really enjoyed this cross stitch and I hope you do too :)

Stay tuned and travel along with us on Quilt Roadies.

Noriko Endo's quilt, White Trees & Butterflies, was inspired by a large screen of white trees waving in the wind. This gave her the idea of creating the trees on her quilt by stitching them with white thread. And, while the butterflies are beautiful, you'll notice she included a couple of scary little creatures that create their own lacy designs. Take a look.

This quilt was on display as part of the Alternative Techniques exhibit at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2018.

Melissa Mortenson from the Polka Dot Chair Blog and WeAllSew has created a tutorial to make these adorable embroidery hoop hanging baskets.

She writes, "I’m always losing my scissors and seam rippers while I’m sewing and thought it would be nice to have a small hanging basket to store them. I liked how my basket turned out so much that I made two of them. I’m going to show you how to make the smaller of the two baskets today and will include the pattern sizes needed to make the larger basket as well. These baskets are just the right size to hang on a pegboard to store small accessories."
