This is Ruth Chandler's first quilt, Thistle Haleakala, that she made in 1991. It's a queen size, hand quilted, hand appliquéd Hawaiian quilt. Isn't that what everyone does for their first quilt?

We love the way Denise Griffiths intrepreted her native Australian flowers in her quilt, Floris Circularis, and the graphic use of the black and white semi-circle on the side. It all works together to make a spectacular quilt.
This quilt was on display as part of the Alternative Techniques exhibit at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2018.

Imagine a world where only kindness exists...like when someone is honking at you in the drive up Starbucks and your first reaction is to pay for their coffee rather than be angry. What if, when someone cuts you off in traffic your first thought is that you hope everything turns out okay for them. There are these bits and pieces of time where the choice can be kindness rather than anger, grab kindness. It takes practice and grace to understand everyone's anger is not about you and that you can train your heart and brain to react in kindness first.

I truly believe if the entire world took up stitching it would be a more peaceful place. Whether it be hand appliqué, quilting, cross stitch, knitting, needlepoint, crochet...there is a peacefulness that embraces the heart when you are stitching. Even Rosey Grier took up needlepoint because he saw the benefits to his soul. Maybe if schools taught stitching, and in "time outs" you got to stitch, the classroom would be more peaceful. The mind boggles with the possibilities!

Noriko Endo's quilt, White Trees & Butterflies, was inspired by a large screen of white trees waving in the wind. This gave her the idea of creating the trees on her quilt by stitching them with white thread. And, while the butterflies are beautiful, you'll notice she included a couple of scary little creatures that create their own lacy designs. Take a look.

The previous Cherrywood challenges featured Wicked, The Lion King, Vincent Van Gogh and Prince. The challenge this year was to create a quilt using the artist Bob Ross as your inspiration. It had to measure 20" x 20" and you could only use the fabric provided in the challenge pack.
