We continue our selection of quilts exhibited in 2019 at the Houston International Quilt Festival as part of their 45th Anniversary, the Sapphire Anniversary. The Sapphire Celebration exhibit is described as:

"Quilters have long used the color blue to symbolize trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Sapphire is also the chosen gem to celebrate 45th anniversaries—which International Quilt Festival is doing this year (2019)! These new and antique blue and white quilts will be suspended from the ceiling in a spectacular and unforgettable display."

To be a part of the exhibit, quilts had to fit the following criteria:

  • Entries may be Traditional, Modern or Art.
  • Entries must have been made between 1974 and 2019.
  • The minimum size is 50” x 50”

Please enjoy the forty-sixth quilt from the exhibition by Susan K. Haslett-Scholfield.

Technology is so advanced these days that soon our sewing machines may be doing the sewing without our help. For now though, we celebrate technology's achievements with our art, which is what Julie McAllister did. She took Carl de Torres' image of Robot Surgeon and created Robo de Torres. Featured at PIQF 2019 at the World Quilt Competition, Julie's quilt used raw edged appliqué techniques to show off "the impact of AI (Artificial Intelligence) on all aspects of our daily working life" as represented in Carl's illustration.

Robo de Torres by Julie McAllister of Australia was featured in the World Quilt Competition at the Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) 2019.

Holiday Spirit was a guild challenge for Bethanne Nemesh where she had to feature her birthday which is December 30th. The muse represents December and there are 30 pine cones to represent the date. Made in the early 2000s, it's a bit different from what we see her doing today.

Star Members can watch Bethanne in Show 2107: Extraordinary Binding Techniques & Amazing Fabric Collage.

Jeanie O'Sullivan's Ties That Bind was inspired by the importance of family, represented here through nature. "Forget-me-not flowers represent memories - bound together within the net of the family we are given and the family we choose." Winning Best Of Country for New Zealand in the World Quilt Competition at PIQF 2019, "the quilt is hand appliquéd over a pieced background and hand quilted." So much intricate detail is packed into each flower makes this a quilt not to be missed.

Ties That Bind by Jeanie O'Sullivan of New Zealand won Best Of Country in the World Quilt Competition at the Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) 2019.

Winter Encounter is a beautiful outdoor scene quilt by Carol Ann Sinnreich depicting the cold of winter and the reality of nature. Here's what Carol Ann has to say about her work, "Snow, cold wind, predators and opportunity force wildlife to keep moving. Winter scenes are more colorful. Reflective light from snow creates a multitude of colors setting the mood and the challenge."

The quilt is 54" x 46 1/2" and is made from cotton. It is appliquéd, has machine thread embroidery, and some pigma pen. It is hand and machine quilted.

Star Members can watch Carol in Show 1612: Quilting the Wild West.
