Using the word “please” is never undesirable or incorrect, in my book. I much prefer a request (please join us) to a command (join us)! Hang in there, Alex! Your show caters to a largely female audience, and many, I expect, appreciate the use of verbal social graces. I, personally, don’t look at “please” as begging, just as a gentle form of polite speech.

If the teacher said "Please take your seat" would anyone say she is desperate? Please is a polite word unless it is said in a desperate voice. I would rather someone say "Please join us" than hear it stated as a command. Because, when you order me to do something, I am FAR less likely to do it unless I know that there are repercussions that I am not willing to accept. (I don't like being ordered about.)
As we say in the South "Alex was raised right!"

And my point is made - LOL

Please is always proper- Alex is correct! I don't like the version that says just "join us" sounds more like a demand than and invitation.

It depends on how you say it. Inflection is key.
