Logan Jacobson began upcycling at a young age. The quilt, Broken to Built, was made from shirts found at Goodwill. With the exception of pinning, Logan made the whole quilt and quilted it on the family longarm.

Broken to Built won First PlaceYouth Quilts, sponsored by Cotton + Steel, at QuiltCon 2020.

I am in love with this quilt — the recycled fabrics, the choice of color and pattern, lights and darks, non-parallel lines and wonky angles — this looks like the work of a mature quilting artist. That you are a youth and a boy makes this all the more fascinating to me, a 64-year-old woman who has been quilting for over 50 years and has never dared break away from straight lines, geometric angles and perfectly rigid patterns. Bravo for this bold composition! Keep on quilting. I’d love to see what you do next.

I love the way the quilting is not exactly in line along the edge of the central panel although it is in the centre. It brings something extra to the whole piece piece. I would like to try this in my own work if that’s OK. The piecing is very clever and well done for using items bought from your charity shop. That’s what we call Goodwill shops over here. Best wishes from a sunny but very quiet England.
