Alex, have you tried the Goo Gone on it?
I am not sure what is on it, but that might work, or take a baking soda and water paste and scrub it with that in stead of ajax.
Also you can try turning the iron on low and using a dryer sheet on top of a towel, use the iron on the dryer sheet to remove residue. Then wipe the iron with a cloth or paper towel after wards.
You might also try vinegar, rub it on the iron.
Either way I would google options before using the ajax and steel wool though.

Make sure your iron is HOT. Also The Silk Baron is great for silk. So affrodable.

If you heat the iron before using an SOS it's pretty effective. Has to be hot though.

Use a dryer sheet to clean your iron. Put paper towel down and sheet on top and iron. Press hard.

Sorry not asking this question while on air. What kind of batting do you use with silks and backing as well.

Don't use furnace filters for masks. They contain fiberglass.

Lost my wi-fi half way through! I have had success with warm iron + Barkeeper's Friend + dish sponge with scrubby side. Also can try Mean Green to soften up gook first. As last resort, Goo-gone is also good.
