For the Love of Squircles by Marla Varner of the Bainbridge Island MQG received the Quilting Excellence Award – Sponsored by The Modern Quilt Guild – at QuiltCon 2020.
If you look at the photos, I think you can figure out what a squircle might be.
Artist Statement: “Inspired by my first squircle quilt, this second version used solid scraps and continued the process of creating a block a day for a year. I once again joined a group of online quilters making daily circle blocks. However, I cut my shapes freehand and applied them using needle turn appliqué. The resulting squircle blocks created an opportunity to explore transitions and the design provided the perfect canvas for hand quilting.”
I received a mini from her in the MQG mini swap (#makeaminimake afriend) in 2018. She is a lovely woman! My adult daughter was with me and was really drawn to her use of perle cotton or a heavier weight thread for hand quilting. Beautiful work, Marla! ♥
