We love Jane Sassaman's work, but we never thought it was "sinister". What do you think?

Artist's Statement for Johnny Jump Ups: "I love to abstract the designs I see in nature, especially plant forms. The distinct characteristics of Johnny Jump Ups seemed to have real graphic possibilities. So this is where I landed...larger than life, rather formal, and a bit sinister."

Johnny Jump Ups by Jane Sassaman won First Place, Appliqué, Small, sponsored by World of Quilts Travel, at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2019.

I love the way Jane uses her wonderfully bright and bold flower fabrics to create a totally new design and effect.
Flowers and bees, simple idea but so very effective. One can spot her work a mile away. Very inspiring.

Those johnny jump ups are definitely looking at me in a sinister way. Jane Sassman's details are delightful.

Very sophisticated.. .and a little modern sassy & edgy!
Not sinister at all.
Fabulous work and a great inspiration!

At first glance the flowers appear to be staring with predatory intent like a hawk or eagle.I realize that this is a stylized depiction of a flower but it looks threatening. I looked at the remaining flowers on my Johnny-jump-Ups and the 'faces " are gentle in appearance, maybe the "eyebrows ' give that look.

It is sinister in the strictest sense of the word in that the focal point is on the left side. (Sinister is the Latin word for “left”, as opposed to dexter which is “right”. Since most of us are right handed and do things more easily with the right hand, dexterous became associated with doing things more easily.)

I like this quilt. It has an art nouveau feel to me. Workmanship is excellent.

Sinister? Only if you think Alice in Wonderland is sinister. Her design is BEAUTIFUL! As usual.

Where I live, Johnny Jump-Ups are almost weeds, popping up everywhere. And I have to say, this piece made me smile, because they seem to be saying "I've Got My Eye on You". Fun piece, beautifully constructed. What are the dimensions?
