Tamara Hanes interviewed Betty Kaliszak about her quilt, ROMANTIC ROAD ROTHENBURG, at AQS QuiltWeek in Chattanooga 2016. Betty won 1st Place in the Wall Quilts – Pictorial category. Learn how she dyed and painted the fabric for her quilt, which started out as a piece of white cloth. What is her secret ingredient? Find out in the video below where she discusses how she made the quilt.

Beautiful quilt with such heartfelt feeling. Question: is it dying if you use paint? Dyes and paints react differently with fabric. Dyes soak into the fibers whereas paints lay on top of the fibers.

I love that you put a little town on your wallhanging. The adding vodka to the dye so it dries faster is a good idea! I don't even drink! LOL!

What a beautiful quilt! I love that she hand dyed the fabric before quilting her picture onto it. Who knew you culd use vodka in dye! A wonderful memory of a special place.

This is beautiful. We visited Rothenburg when my son took us on a tour of Germany when he was stationed at Ramstein AFB.

What a beautiful rendering of this magical little town, one of my favorite places to visit. And my friend Susanne has a charming little quilt store a short walk from the gate! Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing.
