If you've haven't done reverse applique before, so a small practice piece using the above technique, or youtube it. It's better to satin stitch over the raw edge, or turn it back over the seam using a blanket stitch. Looks like a future UFO.

After much head scratching, I finally realized that in the tutorial, when they refer to the backing fabric -- they really mean the background fabric!
