We stared at this quilt for quite a while trying to figure out how it went together. Cairn, by Teri Biglands, is a large quilt (98" x 108") with a curved design that doesn't seem to lend itself to regular piecing. Take a look and see what you think. It's a stunning quilt. (Check out Quilting Techniques below for the answer.)

Cairn, quilted by Shannon Couvillion, was on exhibit at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah Spring 2019.

No mesh is used. Each piece of fabric is individually cut and hand pieced by me.

I think this is fabric overlaid to make the swirling It looks like something similar to a fine mesh.

Louisa’s templates for The Swirl are available on the website stripsandcurves .com. They really make cutting and piecing easy and accurate.

Your are a true trooper and my hero. What a wonderful design and I applaud your complete use of handwork in making it "the old fashioned way". You can be proud of this one Teri! Even Ginny Byer would be impresses.

Thanks for all the kind comments. I made this quilt all by hand . The old fashioned way...I made a template , traced it on the back of the fabric with a pencil and eyeballed the seam allowance. Then I cut each piece out by hand. Then I clipped all the curved seams before hand piecing. The marking and cutting took 3 solid weeks, and I used 26 fabrics. I drafted the template myself and my son ,(a graphic artist) helped me tweak the template to fit properly on his design program. I did not do any applique, although I understand that you can. Each piece was hand sewn.

I am so honored that you liked my quilt. Mission accomplished, I wanted people to puzzle about how I made the quilt. I first spotted the Swirl Block in the book "The Quilts of Indiana", and it was blue and white. I began to try to think what would happen if I added more than 2 colors. About Cairn: I purposely placed similar valued fabrics close together to create a fade effect. I have made several of these Swirl Quilts and each one looks so different from the one before because of the fabric placement. One template. 4 pieces in each Block. Pre drafted on paper. Each fabric is assigned a corresponding Alphabet Letter. To get the Swirl to happen each and every fabric must be pieced correctly, in the proper position.
