They had us at Dr. Matsumoto’s “Klein quartic quilt” which contains 24 seven-sided polygons, with three meeting at each vertex. Read about it in this fascinating article from the NY Times, ‘Knitting Is Coding’ and Yarn Is Programmable in This Physics Lab by Siobhan Roberts.

Click here to go to article; the Klein Quartic Quilt is about mid-way through.

(Who knew they had weekly knitting meetings at the Georgia Tech School of Physics?)

What is amazing is that knitting is only two stitches, knit and purl, but what you do with those two stitches is just about limitless. Simple but yet so complex. Did not know that my charity knits were really physics!!!

Am I still a quilter if I understood the article? By profession I am a field Biologist and teacher! That surprises me too! And I knit too.

Like many of the women (and man) at NASA, quilting and the fiber arts are serious endeavours. It's amazing to see what these people of passion for this art 'put-out". Great article, with other fascinating links, I bookmarked it.

Physics + knitting + tattoos. Just like quilting. Put in a little of everything and it's more interesting.
