We tried counting the number of triangles in this quilt, but gave up. Darla Orndorff's quilt, Bottom of the Basket, is a masterpiece of hand piecing and hand quilting. Measuring 88" x 88", it contains a large number of very small triangles.

Bottom of the Basket was exhibited as part of the Hand Quilted category at AQS QuiltWeek Spring Paducah 2019.

I think the quilt is fascinating; but, Mrs. Serigne the teacher is a winner for involving her students in the quilting math. Great curiosity challenge for her lucky kids!

There are 5024 - 1” and 2” fabric triangle “pieces” in the quilt. I leave it to The mathematicians to determine how many triangles the quilt design creates.

My goodness, counting the triangles never entered my mind...you Ladies that did do the count must have very good eyesight to start with!!!! The teacher was very clever to use this in here classes, good for you Teach!

If I guess "a whole mess of triangles" would that count? :D. Lovely quilt!!!!

I calculate 5096 counting the 4 large triangles made by the crossed white sashing stripes.

How many lifetimes did this take?

Does the quilt maker know how many there are? ;-) :sigh:

I calculated 5124 if there are 24 triangles in the center, 5140, if there are 40

I gave this question to my 8th grade students this morning and they came up with 5020 triangles. They found a pattern and went from there. (I thought I had the answer and one showed me where I had miscalculated
the corner blocks). Very proud of my students. My 7th graders came very close before running out of time. Waiting to see how well my 6th graders do on it. They are finding it interesting that there is so much math in quilting.
