A different twist on a log cabin design netted Jack Weise a 1st place ribbon for his piece, Outside, at QuiltCon 2019. It is hand quilted, machine pieced, and paper pieced.

Many Modern quilts at QuiltCon could have won a ribbon. 3 judges with very different styles had to agree on each category winner. Not only is the handwork on this winner ;-) :-) done exceptionally well, it boasts a good measure of negative space, one of the central but not essential fixtures in MQG guidelines. It also speaks volumes in a very minimal package, another central but not essential concept in Modern Quilting. Well done Jack and the entire QuiltCon staff for an enormously inspiring, creative show.

Love, love, love log cabins but can't find it here. Nevertheless, I like this design.

So sorry that those of you who don't like the quilt or the fact that it received an award apparently don't understand its message.

:D there other quilts there must have been really lacking if this one won first place

Why did this quilt receive an award? Just wondering if it was given to him because he doesn't feel good about himself?
Oh well.

Being a paper-piecer, I got excited when I read it was a paper-pieced Log Cabin, but then disappointed when I saw the quilt, as it was not as I expected. It is a lovely quilt with excellent stitching, but the description threw me! Once again how big is it? Wish sizes were given.

The message of this quilt is outside looking in, and it's generally 'cold' when you're feeling like the outsider. The hand work is perfect, done with precision and love for the work of hand quilting, giving this quilt an obvious #1 ribbon. Extending the piecing into the binding is brilliant. This quilt was thought out, well made, and with message. This is a Quilt Con quilt!
