We found this stunning threadwork masterpiece, The Value of Gears by Judith Phelps, in the National Quilt Museum gallery. Judith wanted the quilt to read like black and white photographs, and only used different values of thread to achieve the effect. It's even more amazing in that it is meant to be seen both from the front and the back. When the pictures are backwards, you are seeing the back of the quilt.

I recently found this book at a Thrift Shop and bought it because it was so unusual. I loved the story which at times is represented by the drawings instead of words. The book is a true treasure and this quilt is so true to the artwork.

Absolutely stunning!
As a quilter who has done thread painted dog portraits, I truly appreciate the hours spent making this quilt.
Judith is a truly gifted artist!

When I taught school, my kids loved the book and the illustrations. I knew immediately the pictures resembled the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret. What a beautiful tribute! Just gorgeous!

Unbelievable. I can't begin to figure all this out. My quilts are all simple but I admire the work.
