Enjoy Laura's advice:

It's that time of year when we are expected to make ridiculous resolutions that we will never keep.
Lose weight?
Ha! On the first day of January I always realize it's a bad mistake.
Here are 4 more resolutions that I give you permission to ignore:

  1. Finishing all your projects. Don't bother. The whole reason we begin new projects is to enjoy that satisfying blast of creativity that comes with starting something new. When that project feels like an anchor around your foot it's time to start something new. We don't want to miss out on any creative time tending to an anchor.
  2. Making the perfect quilt or embroidery. You put a lot of work into your projects. And if something is too perfect looking it looks like it was made by a machine, not by your all-too-human hands. Don't let the machines win!
  3. Keeping up with finances or bookkeeping. As an owner of a cottage industry, I can assure you that you can reconcile all your checkbooks and bookkeeping in one grueling week early next year while only eating carrots and water.
  4. Keeping an immaculate house. As Phyllis Diller once said, "I know housekeeping can't kill you, but why take a chance?" Let's all practice safety in the New Year.

Now I understand why I have so many works in progress. I can’t let that anchor pull me under. I love all your ideas on resolutions. I made one years ago and still live by it. NEVER make a resolution then you are never set up for failure.

I'm posting these where I can see them regularly! Thanks, Laura!

I'm good for 3 out of the 4. I have trouble with letting housekeeping go because I'm so picky with tidiness and cleanliness. It IS a burden! I don't even let threads fall to the floor. As I write this I realise I'm not letting myself enjoy quilting to the fullest of my capacity. In recent years I have let number 4 slide but that's only because I fall A LOT so I literally can't clean. If anyone has any tips how I can remove the cleaning "stick up my toosh" I will welcome them! Great advice!!! ;-)

Great advice!

I think as women we are striving to "do it all, have it all". It just isn't possible and, like the rules that another quilter told us about ("Never point out your mistakes; never point out your mistakes; never point out your mistakes"), these are great. Quilting can become a burden if there are too many rules to follow. I agree, "Don't let the machines win." Hooray, Laura!!

Thanks everyone for your encouragement! There must be even more resolutions we can ignore. Ideas?

Now I understand why I love new projects and can't quite finish. It's the anchor!

I like her comment that it should not look too perfect.
"Don't let the machines win!"
