Jenny Bowker taught a class in 2010 to encourage people to use cut-off designs in fabric and then completing those shapes with free-motion quilting. My Tangled Garden is an amazing example of that technique. Jenny's quilt was on display at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2018.

Learn Jenny's quilting technique in Show 1804: Quilting Outside the Blocks.

A nice idea that I intend to try. Slowly guiding the picture under the needle looks so doable.

How incredibly beautiful. I'd be inspired if I thought I had the talent to do it.

G-Ma Deb: Free motion is a skill that takes practice. Even the most expert quilters I know warm up on a practice piece before they start intricate quilting. I’ve improved & when I retire & have more time to quilt I know I’ll improve more quickly!

Quoting g-ma Deb:
*sigh* does anyone else look at this exquisite quilts and just feel like a mudhole peasant compared to a queen?? I won't EVER make such world-class winning quilts. It strikes me that I'm NOT that talented OR will never EVER be able to afford a quilting machine, which one won't ever have a quilt like this without!~ My hat's off to those who have such high talents.

G-Ma Deb, don't despair! If you look at the show sign, you'll see that she used a domestic sewing machine, not a longarm. You CAN do it! Maybe not as well (I can't, either), but you can still learn how to do beautiful things. :) Take heart!
