It's no wonder that this Top 8 Award-Winner from the Houston International Quilt Festival 2018 won the award for Innovative Artistry. Silent Canary is a tribute to America's coal miners. Patricia Kennedy-Zafred took an image from the Library of Congress and used multiple techniques and materials to create her work, including hand-dyed fabrics, photo transfers, silkscreen images, Procion dyes and more.

I love a quilt with a social conscience. May we never forget our labour history and those who sacrificed so much just to feed their families.

This is just lovely. Nothing I could envision myself doing as it takes a lot of diverse techniques which I am not into. But, I do appreciate the skill in this quilt.

It makes a statement about coal miners but other than that I don't see what's so special about photo transfers and simple quilting. Nothing unique about this quilt.

THIS QUILT IS A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE TO THE AMERICAN MINERS. MY FATHER WAS A MINER ALL OF HIS LIFE AND DIED FROM EMPHYSEMA AND SILICOSIS (ROCK DUST). THERE WERE NO BATH HOUSES FOR THEM BACK IN THE DAY, SO HE CAME HOME TO US AS YOU PORTRAY IN YOUR QUILT, COVERED IN THE BLACK COAL DUST. THE ONLY THING WHITE ON MY FATHER WAS HIS TEETH. MY HOME TOWN MADE A BEAUTIFUL MARBLE TRIBUTE TO THE MINERS AND BRICK PATHWAYS WITH THEIR NAMES ENGRAVED. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR LOVELY QUILT. ANNA PARRIS, BRISTOL, VA
