The history of pillows date back to ancient Mesopotamia around 7,000 BC! Their function was not comfort, as they were made of stone. It wasn't until the Romans and Greeks started stuffing bags with reeds and straw that we began to see the beginning of the pillow as we know it. The word pillow comes from the middle English word pilwe or the Latin word pulvinus. The actual word "pillow" was used just before the 12th Century! And, there are carvings where different species of animals constructed a pillow out of rock or plant material to support their heads in the wild...go figure. And I thought all this time that Macy's was the pillow inventor, LOL.
In my pillow research I discovered that you are supposed to replace your pillow for sanitary reasons every 3-5 years...so I guess that flat one in the guest room needs to be replaced! And, when you replace a pillow, be prepared to spend a good part of an afternoon deciding which one will be the prefect pillow. My house is filled with a variety of types of bed pillows because I am like one of the 3 Bears...this one is too soft...this one is too hard...and, I have yet to find one that is just right. I do have a near perfect pillow, but it is over 3 years old!!! And, I can't find a replacement! So for now I carry it with me when I go from the house to the camper.
I was amazed at the subsets of pillow information, but my favorite is the Decorative Pillow! Why? Because I can combine my love of quilting, stitching and gift giving all in one pillow project! Everyone loves a decorative pillow, and stores are filled with huge varieties...it is a frugal way to change one's decor without buying all new furniture...Just change the pillows! I especially love holiday pillows as they set the mood for whatever season you are celebrating. The satisfaction of finishing a project before another gray hair pops up is just what a pillow can bring!
This photo is of pillows that were gifted to me, except for the Buttermilk Basin Winter pattern...I made that one! I like the variety of techniques and there is nothing sweeter than a pillow to bring a smile to the face of family and friends!
