Mark Sherman saw an image on the cover of a book in a museum shop and wanted to make a quilt based on that image. It turns out it was a page from the Book of Kells. Mark had to get special permission from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, to make the quilt. It took him six years and a jeweler's loupe to complete it.

Hear Mark tell the whole story of his quilt, Chi Rho, in Show 2301: Luminous Stained Glass Quilts.

I would travel to Ireland just to see the Book of Kells.
This quilt is a lovely tribute to a world treasure.

This quilt is awe inspiring! Even that is damning it with faint praise. It is the most phenomenal quilt that I have ever seen.

I too saw the Book in Dublin...breath taking. I can remember the smells in the old library today. Smells combined with the visual left a memory I will always carry

When I saw the Book of Kells I stood there and cried. To think of the men who gave their lives and maybe their eyesight to complete such works just hit me like a ton of bricks. I am sure that seeing Mark's quilt would have the same effect. The years, the dedication and the intense work is inspiring. Thank goodness for jeweler's loupes so Mark didn't have to give his sight also. Thank you so much for sharing the quilt with us..

That quilt is one of the most amazing pieces of work I've ever seen. Such complexity so well executed.
