At QuiltCon 2016 we saw this wonderful Pine Burr quilt. Tara Faughnan created the quilt which was totally new to Capt'n John. Are you familiar with this type of quilt? Our detail picture tries to give you a perspective to understand the work, the amount of fabrics, and the weight. Great job, Tara.

This Pine Burr pattern is the official quilt of the state of Alabama. It was made popular by the Alabama Freedom Quilting Bee in Gee's Bend, AL. The Pine Burr quilt is also the signature quilt of NEA Heritage Award honoree Lucy Mingo. The "burrs" (triangular folds) in the quilt pictured above are in the different configuration from the traditional Pine Burr, however the concept is the same. There is also the traditional patchwork Pine Burr pattern.

This is clever! But I'm not familiar with a "pine burr" What exactly is a pine burr? I tried googling it and "pine burr quilts" comes up, which doesn't help at all.

To me, it looks like the layers on a pine cone.

WOW! I had never heard of a pine burr quilt and am amazed at the results. But, once you see it, you realize how appropriate the name is. :-) I could also see making a smaller (MUCH smaller) version for a child and how much fun they would have lifting up all the little points to see what was under there. :D

Are the rows horizontal or are they formed on the angle?

Before I opened the photo, I'd already heard of a Pine Burr quilt. Wow!! This was not what I expected to see, but it is wonderful, very tactile and colorful. Congratulations on such a masterpiece!
