Ximo won both 1st Place and 3rd Place in the Merit Quilting - Stationary Machine Category sponsored by BERNINA at Houston 2016. This piece, called Little by Little, is an amazing display of quilting. As you can see, the answer to the question is "Yes, it's thread. This is a whole-cloth blue quilt, with quilting making the design." Fantastic!

The intro says she used a stationary machine, but doesn't say what kind. I wonder whether it was a sit-down midarm or a regular domestic sewing machine?
