At Houston 2016 there was a wonderful Japanese Exhibit organized by the Japan Handicrafts Instructors' Association. This quilt by Mihoko Tanaka is named A Happy New Year, "Kado-Matu" in the Rising Sun. The quilted Oriental Phoenixes (thank you CrazyCuban) are just one of the creations that caught our eye. You can learn more from the sign at the bottom of the page, but we wish we could know more about the border treatment.

Is there a pattern for this design? I would love to make something similar. Looking at this takes my breath away!

Absolutely glorious! I find some of the design elements fascinating. I LOVE the quilting designs - the phoenixes and sakura and to die for.

Oh, and CrazyCuban, you are correct. I have one tattooed on my back. ;-)

the border looks like obi sashes. I wish I'd picked up many at the flea market when we were stationed in Japan! Beautiful fabric.

Even better in person. I went to Houston and not only saw the quilt, but I met her.

Thank you for showing us this exquisite quilt.
I do have a correction to make to your comments: If you look at the "cranes" closely you would realize they are actually Oriental Phoenixes. You can see the head of a pheasant, the wings of a Roc, and the tail feathers of a peacock. Just saying.

Beautiful art quilt! Enjoyed the explanation of the use of banners commemorating the New Year in Japan. The lettering at the bottom is interesting. Wonder if it was done on a sewing machine?
