Ricky started quilting in June of 1991. Although his techniques and skills were still in their infancy, that December he designed and made a Santa wall quilt from the scraps he had accumulated. He made the quilt without first creating a pattern. He just “winged it” as it progressed.

Still to this day, Ricky laughingly ponders… “If I could figure out how to randomly piece this quilt together, why did I not figure out how to give Rudolf hind legs?” And in case you are wondering, the blue and striped thing is supposed to be his bag of toys.

Now in 2017, almost 30 years later, he is considering turning this design into a pattern. What do you think he should do?

If you just change the angle of Rudolf's body, then the hind legs would be "hidden" behind the Christmas tree.

Sharmacdonald I LOVE the whimsical character of this quilt! People are way too critical! Santa's face is beautiful...(BT W, he SHOULD be tired.. he traveled all night! There's a reason they call it "red-eye" flights!). And who cares if Rudolf doesn't have legs! I think this quilt is great just the way it is!

I agree with Lilly---Santa looks tired. He needs a perky Hercule Poirot mustache!

Love the quilt, but keep it an original. Do give details of improv quilt design tho, technique used, muslin background?, etc. Agree with other comments re card, thinking blue and white a chosen pond vs a darker bag. Certainly a happy quilt to remember back...

I was with mpizzazz in thinking the blue and white stripes were a frozen pond. I love this Ricky. Show it often but don't let the world have a pattern.

I love the quilt however, it is just as unique as Ricky and should be his alone (to share with family and friends of course ).

Absolutely love it. It's hilarious! It should remain one of a kind. It has given me ideas though.
