I've made similar design boards, but glued leftover binding around the edges to pretty them up. Also, I purchased a used 12" square canvas covered frame at Goodwill for $1, with a child's artwork. I glued and stapled batting over the frame, which covered the artwork and makes a great heavy duty block design board. Keeping my eyes peeled for more used canvas covered frames.

I purchased a picture stand at the craft store, with a half off coupon, and my board stands up! Works great.

I bought a 3 sided display board, covered it in flannel and when I want to use it I can open it up to 3X6, and that makes a fine design wall.
