Yes, Ricky said it! - "Miss Thing Needs to Shut Her Mouth!"

The creative individual has to fight plenty of self-imposed battles. This is a battle that simply needs to go away. Here is what Ricky has to say during his lecture on the Creative Muse at the new Quilt Luminarium.

Bravo, Ricky, You have given people permission to ignore (politely but firmly, I hope) those within their environment whose focus is to under mine their creativity and spoil their enthusiasms. The Miss Thing(s), male or female, have got nothing and get pleasure in putting others down.

I can so relate to this. Whilst at school I used a singer treadmill sewing machine for the first time. I had never used a sewing machine at all. I sewed a hem on my apron for cookery class and it did not turn out quite right. The teacher publically downed me so much that I never touched a sewing machine again until 2005. The class was in 1970. Such an affect on my creativity.

Thanks for the reminder, Ricky! We all tend to be our own worst critic and we certainly don't need Miss Thing reinforcing that! Nobody sees your mistakes but you and you really don't need to point them out if they miss them!

I've been thinking about Miss Thing all day, so I suppose Ricky has hit a nerve! The thing about Miss Thing, is that before she dumps all that criticism on others, she has turned it on herself first. That is why she doesn't finish quilts -- she is paralyzed by her own internal criticism. So that is sad for everybody.

The thing about creativity, is that criticism is a necessary part of the process. The trick is always balance. I don't think we're ever going to walk a perfectly straight line, with perfectly formed ideas that spring up just as we want them. Sometimes we're too critical, and other times we keep flogging a dead horse. Hopefully, eventually, we see that we're off course, correct, and keep going!

Unfortunately, one of the reasons Miss Thing doesn't get anything done is because she can see imperfections and is unable to move past that in her own work, thus, nothing gets done. You are right to not let that stop your progress, but feel a bit of pity for those who don't understand the journey and the feeling of "Done-done!" (first is the top, second is binding)
