That's what the Smithsonian had to do to help restore the Star-Spangled Banner. In 1914, Amelia Fowler was hired to preserve the Star-Spangled Banner Flag. Undoing her stitches would require unbelievable precision and time.

I love American History. I am a US Air Force Veteran and had been Adjuant of my American Legion Post in Norman, OK. The last surviving family of a Solider who was killed in 1916. I have in my position his burial flag and belongings which he had when he was inducted into the Army. How do I preserve this century old flag?

Quoting Anne Brennan:
Is this the first American flag? If not, what is its history?

On September 14, 1814, U.S. soldiers at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry raised a huge American flag to celebrate a crucial victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The sight of those “broad stripes and bright stars” inspired Francis Scott Key to write a song that eventually became the United States national anthem. This was that flag. Not the first American flag. This is the Star Spangled Banner.
