Created with over 4 million seashells, no one has the answer to the mystery of "Shell Grotto" which was discovered in 1835 in Margate, Kent. This ornate subterranean passageway has almost all of the surface area of its walls and ceiling covered in shell mosaics.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing with us. Cannot imagine how any one person could have done such a magnificently gorgeous work of art in their lifetime.

Beautiful artistry. The multiple designs are like so many quilts that have been shown on your show. Very inspiring. Can't wait to see more of the animal quilts.kqvmy

Amazing artistry and imagination. Can you imagine the patience of the creator(s)?

Putting some of those designs together would make a gorgeous whole cloth quilt.
Thank you for sharing it with us. Also, thanks Nann for the archeological info.

This looks wonderful. It reminds me of the gorgeous shell room in Woburn Abbey which was the inspiration for me to do my bathroom. I mosaiced all the walls, some with shell and some with tiny tiles. Big job, and I ended up having a carpal tunnel op afterward from cutting them lol.
