Many of us learned to sew in school. Those days seem to be gone, but home sewing is still going strong.  This article for the "New York Times" shows how the "McCall Pattern Company" still thrives in today's ever changing world. Make sure to look at both slideshows in the article, you'll recognize some very young "famous" faces.

I loved this article... well worth seeing both slide shows because #2 was so nostalgic! I have done professional costume sewing in LA and Vegas, have a degree from FIDM and yet love to quilt at this cycle of my life. In the early 80's I worked in a costume shop that made several McCall's pattern samples. This was in LA and the designer I worked for designed for McCall's. As a pre-teen I learned to sew from both my mother and school and I am sorry that it is not taught so much anymore. Loved the memories the article brought back!!

Loved this article. Thanks for highlighting it. I mostly channel my sewing toward making wall quilts now, but I still will occasionally make a garment, and I still buy patterns from time to time. :-) Indeed, I am usually inspired to sew clothes when I'm anticipating going to a quilting event of some sort. :D

Wonderful article I too read to the end and thoroughly enjoyed both slide shows. As most of my peers I began sewing before Jr Hi, taking Home EC classes thru High School and some classes in College. These days my passion is quilting and (reluctantly) making repairs and or remaking garments for my family.

This was a wonderful article. I worked at Hancock Fabrics for about 6 months and loved putting the new patterns away! I also worked at a fabric store in SF (now closed) many years ago and would make samples for the store windows. I sewed clothes for myself from 16 to 40 and loved doing it. I'm a quilter now and don't sew clothes anymore but this article brought back very fond memories. Thank you.

I love to sew too, but finding fabric to sew garments is not an easy thing to do.

I enjoyed this article to no end. I have been sewing garments since I was 8 years old. I followed fashion but took a detour for a career, now that I'm retired I have time to wallow in fabric and have been sewing garments and attempting to learn quilting. This brought back so many good memories thank you for sharing.
