Melissa Sobotka's quilts have won major awards.  Two of them specifically, "Silk Road Sampler" and "End of the Spin," appear to be inspired by various collections.  This visit to a hardware store in Phoenix, AZ, might just be the place for you find your own collection to inspire that award-winning quilt.

I am first a quilter and then a construction woman. I really never thought of putting the two together and am now looking at how I can incorporate the two together. My email address paintedneedle was designed by my daughter who was 7 at the time. I used the art of paint to recreate fabric on the wall in her bedroom to pay for my minor in Interior Design and now I can reverse my process.

I think the point of the video was to see patterns, shapes and find inspiration in everyday things. You get using a bouquet of flowers as color inspiration right? You've heard of someone using the pattern from a tile floor or brick wall as inspiration for arranging simple squares before? Try seeing the world with new eyes, the eyes of a quilt designer. I saw parallel lines in the row of ladders like using jelly roll strips. Saw circles of different sizes that could be layered in bright colors for a baby quilt. There were chevrons, diamonds and houndstooth shapes that could be duplicated in simple patterns to make an easy or complicated quilt. I also first thought the video might have suggestions of tools like rulers, cutting blades, ect. you could use in quilting but instead was inspired by all the pattern repeats in those neat shelves and stacks of ordinary things .

A little imagination, improvisation and a Bernina can work wonders.MD

I did not see any inspiration in quilt making from what I saw in this video. It was a waste of my time waiting for what I thought was going to benefit my quilting. I saw nothing whatsoever to do with quilting.
