In my classes I make the students cut with their left hand.
NO second ruler.
NO cutting towards one's self.
The last time a student said "I can't use my left hand.", I asked "Which hand do you use when you wash your hair?"
Hold the ruler with the right hand and cut with the left. It's actually VERY easy and requires no thought.
