Dana Lynch, Mary Holman, Bridge Lilja, Wanda Myers, Mary Kay Runyan, Cindy Bell Neville, Hanne-Grete Brink, and Karen Fitzpatrick make up the Amazing Eight.  A group of quilters from across the country, and across the sea, that decided to get together to make a quilt.  And what a quilt!

FriendLily Blossoming was created by the eight and was an amazing experience for them all.  Listen and watch Mary Kay describe how they accomplished their goal.

There's a rumor going 'round that there just might be a ninth quilter next year - stay tuned.

Dawn Siden (Scoopie) found that many people wanted to say thank you to Debbie and Clara for undertaking the half-square triangle exchange. So Dawn contacted one person in every country, territory in Australia, provence in Canada and state in the USA that participated in the exchange and asked them to make a block that represented that state, country, etc. These 64 blocks from our talented TQS members (and Alex!) are the result and a wonderful way to say "Thank You!"

The blocks were kept a secret (for six months) and presented at the TQS dinner in Houston.

Thank you to Dawn for the slideshow and all her hard work as well.

Sharon interviews Gail Thomas with her quilt, Someone Found.

Here's Gail's artist statement: In 1836 in Texas, Cynthia Ann Parker, age 9, was kidnapped, adopted, renamed Nadauh (someone found), and spent 24 years with the Comanche.  The Comanche consider children their most precious gift.  Her son, Quanah Parker, is called the Great Chief of the Comanche.  This quilt express the contrast and blending of two traditional cultures.

Helen is one of our favorites and one of the "Three Sisters".  (Watch for Gail Thomas tomorrow).  Helen brings Australia to the rest of the world in her quilts.  See how in Helen's quilt, "Swanning East."

Here's Helen's artist statement: The black swans of Western Australia are taking flight and heading east. This quilt celebrates the majestic beauty of black birds using over sixty different black fabrics on a hand-painted backdrop to depict their serene surroundings.

One of the major exhibits at the Houston International Quilt Festival this year was Texas Quilts Today: Selections from the Book Lone Stars III.  These quilts represent a wide variety of quiltmaking styles and techniques from modern quiltmakers who live, or have lived, in the Lone Star State.  These quilts help to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Texas' independence from Mexico.

This was quite a large exhibit and TQS is only able to show a small portion of this amazing show. A companion book, Lone Stars III - A Legacy of Texas Quilts, 1986-2011, by Karey Bresenhan and Nancy O'Bryant Puentes is available with a history and photographs of all of the quilts. Click here to order your copy.

Have you ever wondered what to do with your father's, brother's, or husband's old ties?  We all know you can make a quilt.  Well these two gals in Houston had more than one idea.  When they strolled by the TQS booth, we just knew we needed to get some pictures.
