Sheila Frampton-Cooper stopped by Ricky's exhibit, All That Jazz, Improvisational Quilts 2012 to discuss her quilt in the exhibit, Sunset Cinema.  Sheila talks about how she came up with the idea for the quilt, her thoughts on quilting the project and the type of fabric that she used to create the quilt.

The colors and life in the French Quarter of New Orleans was an inspiration to me.  I was drawn to the ironwork that made such wonderful quilting designs.

Here is a sample of the colors and designs along with a little girl stealing money out of the musicians bucket.

Last weekend the Road to California Quilter's Conference and Showcase "The Best in the West" was held at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, CA. As expected a number of spectacular quilts were display.

Here is just a sampling of the beauty that could be found on the floor. You'l recognize quilts from TQS Members and TQS Guests, not to mention a TQS BOM and a few Ricky Tim's hand-dyes.

The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles has a lot going on in 2012.  On February 14, the 17th biennial Quilt National returns to the museum.

This quintessential exhibition of contemporary art quilts features 45 works by first time entrants and established artists. Juried by Eleanor McCain, Pauline Verbeek-Cowart, and Nelda Warkentin in Ohio during the fall of 2010, the exhibit showcases state-of-the art contemporary quilting in all of its range of styles, techniques, and multi-faceted contemporary expressions.

Here is what the museum has to say about the exhibit:

The diversity of surface design techniques, explosive color combinations, and textural inventions, combined with skilled craftsmanship and untold hours of stitching, set the stage for an exciting, unique, and dazzling exhibit. Abstraction, variations of geometric design, and nature are the prominent themes. The quilts in this stunning exhibit are bound by tradition in that they are pieced and stitched and utilize three layers of top, batting, and backing, while expanding the boundaries of the traditional by using new materials, techniques, and technologies. Ultimately, the works selected and exhibited in Quilt National are part of the continuing tradition of the fluid and transformative nature of this compelling medium.

In 2010, the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles launched a new signature event--the International TECHstyle Art Biennial (ITAB).  ITAB is a juried exhibition of work by artists merging fiber media with new information and communication technologies in their artistic processes, as a medium of artistic expression, and/or in the content of their work.

ITAB seeks to expose and explore the tensions between and among works by artists using fiber media whose work employs diverse artistic disciplines. The museum welcomes submissions from artists in the fields of architecture, fashion, fiber art, installation art, interior design, new media, painting, sculpture, etc.

The museum is currently calling for submissions for the latest exhibition with the exhibition running from August 7 - October 21, 2012. The submission deadline is April 2, 2012 with notification on June 1, 2012. For a single entry fee of $35, you may enter up to three separate pieces.

The 2012 San Francisco Bay Area Regional Button Show is coming up Saturday, February 11, 2012. Sponsored by the Golden Gate San Francisco Button Club, there will be a variety of buttons for sale and button collections for crafters, jewelry artists, quilters, sewers, and knitters.

Here's a look at the 2010 Heritage Button Show:

The show will be held at the Historic Del Monte Building, 100 South Murphy Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA. The hours are 9:30 am - 3:30 pm.  Donation $5 with parking athe high-rise parking structure at CALTRAIN.

Can you spot what these quilts have in common? If you look closely: you might recognize the maker of a couple of the pieces shown here. 

Mark your calendars for the upcoming all-male quilt show, Male Call: Quilts by Men, at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in Golden, CO. You'll see works by Ricky Tims, David Taylor, Shawn Quinlan, and a number of other male quilters who embrace the medium of fabric. The show opens January 30, and runs through April 28, 2012. "Every quilt and quilter has a story, revealing that quilting is not a woman's experience or a man's experience. Quilting is a human experience."
