Join in C&T's 30th anniversary celebration and your quilt just might be published in one of their latest books.

Next year will be the 30th anniversary of C&T Publishing's first published book, An Amish Adventureby Roberta Horton. It all started with an impulsive promise back in 1983. When quilting teacher Roberta Horton told quilt-shop owner Carolie Hensley that she wanted to write a book on Amish quilts, but hadn't found a publisher yet, Carolie quickly said that she and her husband Tom would publish Roberta's book. "We knew nothing at all about publishing," Carolie says now. "I had never even thought about getting into the book business-the words just came out of my mouth!" That spontaneous promise was the start of a 30-year adventure.

Fast forward to today. An Amish Adventure is still in print, now in its second edition, but so much else has changed. Carolie and Tom Hensley have turned the business over to their sons Todd and Tony, who are assisted by a staff of more than 50 employees. C&T Publishing's catalog includes more than 400 books and products for fabric artists of all types.

C&T is honoring their 30th anniversary with a celebration of 30 Amish Quilts and they are looking for submissions of Amish and Amish-inspired quilts to be included in the 30th anniversary book. If you or someone you know is interested in submitting a quilt for this exciting publication, please click here or visit www.ctpubentry.com for all the details.

Submissions dates are August 31st, 2012 to September 30th, 2012!

This weeks brings a close to our global tours.  We end the tour with a visit to the
Republic of Turkey.  A country filled with cosmopolitan cities, pastoral villages and barren landscapes.  A big thank you to TQS member Randi for sharing these wonderful images with us.

We hope that you have enjoyed our weekly jaunts around the world this summer.  Let us know if you would like to see more of these tours in the future.

1792_dress1500_15002000_pixels.jpgDo you know who made this dress and how they did it?  We'll give you some hints:

  • It was created using one of Alex' favorite tools.
  • It is called the "Kakapo Parrot Dress."
  • It was designed for the Gabby Wild Foundation.
  • The designer was part of a famous TV show.

Give up?

It was designed by Jay McCarroll, the winner of the 1st season of Project Runway. Jay studied fashion design at the former Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, now Philadelphia University, where he currently teaches.
The feathers for the dress were created using the AccuQuiltGO! Fabric Cutter and GO! Feathers die. "AccuQuilt has a huge variety of really useful prodjcts," said McCarroll. "Being able to use the AccuQuilt GO! Fabric Cutter rather than cutting by hand was a huge time saver."

The dress was created for the 12 for 12 in 12 Animal Activist Campaign using the AccuQuiltGO! Fabric Cutter.  According to the AccuQuilt site,

With the number of endangered species around the world continuing to grow each year, Gabby Wild, the founder of The Gabby Wild Foundation, is taking a stand against this important, yet often neglected cause. 12 in 12 for 12 is the integrative approach to combine eco-conscious fashion with animals in a fundraiser/awareness project to promote conservation of 12 unique, endangered and critically endangered animal species. McCarroll has created a dress to represent the Kakapo Parrot.
The dress will be given to Gabby in October with funds going to the Kakapo Recovery Program.

While he was in Nebraska, Captain John stopped by the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and visited the International Quilt Study Center & Museum.  While there he came upon the exhibit, Jean Ray Laury: Getting It All Together.  The Museum was kind enough to let him take and share photos of the exhibit.

Here is information from the Museum about the exhibit.  The Museum website has quite a bit of additional information and more quilt photos.

March 2 - September 2, 2012
Curation of Jean Ray Laury: Getting It All Together
Nancy Bavor, guest curator
Jonathan Gregory, Assistant Curator of Exhibitions
Exhibitions Work Team
Marin Hanson, Curator of Exhibitions
Carolyn Ducey, Ph.D., Curator of Collections
Janet Price, Collections Manager
Jennifer Walker Graham, Exhibitions Assistant
Jean Ray Laury had it all together, so it seems,
and she taught other women how to live a balanced life in the roles they chose, making room for everyday creativity. This was Laury’s feminist viewpoint, one that appealed to women for whom a radical change in lifestyle was neither practical nor desirable.
The works of Laury’s hands and mind
reveal a woman who—as an artist, quiltmaker, feminist, mother, wife, homemaker, teacher, mentor, and author—combined the many ingredients of her life, along with a dash of humor, into an integrated whole. She “had it all together.”
Jean Ray Laury: Getting It All Together features Laury’s quilts,
artworks in other media, and her personal and professional records selected from the IQSC Collections and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Archives and Special Collections. Laury donated her art and papers in 2010, a few months before her death on March 2, 2011. Unless otherwise noted, all items are drawn from this generous gift.

With the Olympics just passed, we thought we'd select a few quilts that we think merit Gold Medals in Quilting. All of these artists have won numerous ribbons and awards and achieved their goals with their Gammill machines.

We also have a potential up-and-comer who is just learning to use a Gammill - That would be an upstart quilter named, Ricky Tims.  He shares his "longarm odyssey" here.

You can learn some of these artists Gold Medal techniques right here at TQS:  If you have Gift Certificates, you can select some of these shows for FREE.

Cheri Meineke-Johnson & Linda Taylor - Ep 604 - Become a Machine "Doodler"; Linda also has a TQS classroom - Longarm Quilting

Linda Thielfoldt - Ep 1006 - Watch & Wear;

Sue Garman - Sue has created 4 of our TQS BOMs - click here for tips from the 2009 BOM that can be used to help in your everyday quilting.  You can also catch Sue in Ep 503: Long Arm Weaving.

Cathy Franks - Ep 503: Long Arm Weaving.

Judy Woodworth - Ep 609 - Freeform feathers and Happy endings
