We just learned that Gail Thomas' "Grandmother's Legacy" won First Place in the "Pictorial Quilt" category at the NQA Quilt Show in Columbus, Ohio.  Congratulations, Gail and thank you for sharing with us the process you went through to create this award winner. (If you missed the videos following her creation, please go here to watch.)

Gail loves to paint and share and she teaches her techniques in a new DVD titled "The Art of Painting on Fabric."  She was so touched by the huge response she received from our TQS members that she is giving 3 lucky people a copy of her DVD PLUS a pattern of a drawn Iris - the same iris Gail draws and paints in the DVD.

To enter, simply click here to send an email to fabricpainting@thequiltshow.com and put "Gail Thomas" in the subject line. Your entry needs to be in by Monday June 29, 2009 midnight PST.  (THANK YOU FOR ENTERING.  THIS CONTEST HAS NOW CLOSED.)

To contact Gail to teach, or to order yourself the DVD ($40 US $C50) and get started right away, send Gail an email by clicking here  tyderw@shaw.ca

(Michael Hinton, Global Sales & Marketing Manager with Gammill Quilting Systems, poses with the ladies of the Southern Belle Grandmothers Club - No. 1011)

Make plans to visit Historic Downtown West Plains, Mo this weekend June 19 - 20 for the Old Time Music Ozark Heritage Festival. Old and new quilts collected from throughout the region will be exhibited by the Southern Belle Grandmothers Club #1011 , and Gammill Quilting Systems will demonstrate quilting machines. The Quilt Show exhibit is proudly sponsored by Gammill.

The Old Time Music Ozark Heritage Festival in West Plains, Missouri celebrates old time music and the unique culture of the Ozark Highlands. Different from its rural counterparts, bluegrass and country, old time music has its distinctive sound and makes its own important contribution to the complex palette of what we call indigenous American music.

Musicians, artisans, and storytellers from throughout the state come to the West Plains festival. So if you are in the area, you are sure to find lots of good food, great music, beautiful quilts and fun for the whole family. Be sure to tell everyone at Gammill "hello"!

1947_traffic_barrel_monster_01.jpg

NC State student Joseph Carnevale, the artist behind the Traffic Barrel Monster, has been arrested for stealing the barrels and "cutting and screwing them together to make a statue," which apparently is a misdemeanor in North Carolina.

Carnevale goes by the name "uliveuburn" and has been a fixture in the Raleigh-area street art scene for a while, notable for his creation of the Boylan Bridge Angry Man. Given the similar theme and creativity it didn't take the local police long to decide the 21-year-old is to blame. The total cost of the damage has been estimated at $360 and a court case is scheduled for July 21st. (H/T to Nerium, Ray) [WRAL, The Smoking Gun]

Drawing Day: Draw and Win

1921_728x90_drawingday_1.gif

It's Drawing Day...a worldwide initiative to get everyone to draw for the sake of art.   TQS is joining the effort and has opened a Show & Tell area to put up your drawings.  We want not only your drawing, but we want to become a "worldwide refrigerator" and see the drawings of your family.  Here is a chance to encourage the creativity of your kids and grandkids and give them an opportunity to see their work on the web.  So take away the video game remote for today and give them a pencil, crayon and paper.  Then they can help you upload the picture by:

1.  Scanning your picture and uploading it to our Show & Tell area

2.  Taking your camera and getting a picture of the drawing and then uploading it.

Your drawing uploaded to our site automatically enters you for a chance at a special quilting goody bag.

Kids seldom need ideas, but if you need some ideas: show us a quilt block, a quilting pattern, a flower in your yard, a self portrait, a bird from your area, or a tree.  (This will be for the whole family, so keep it family safe.)  If this is outside your comfort area, then even better.

The worldwide "Drawing Day" goal is 1 million pictures.  Our goal at TQS is several hundred pictures.  Can we reach 500?
