Jerome by Margot McDonnell won First Place, Art Pictorial at Road to California 2013. It was created from a photo she took in the old mining town of Jerome, AZ. She hand appliquéd, painted, penciled, penned, netted, and hand embroidered the quilt to give the house and surroundings a textured, weather look.

After sharing her favorite sources of inspiration, Jean shows the important role of value in building her quilted compositions, her approach to construction, and how she overcomes the occasional creative rut. Judy's quilt, Crazy A'Peel, is a combination of the Orange Peel pattern and a modern art version of a crazy quilt. She used silk and upholstery fabrics, added trapunto, braid, buttons, miscellaneous embellishments and Swarovski crystals, and finally quilted it with holographic thread.  You'll want to take the time to wander around and find all of its hidden suprises. The quilt was exhibited at IQF Houston 2012.

Pelican Parade, by Joanne Baeth, was the winner of the Outstanding Art Quilt category at Road to California 2013. It is her original design and measures 62" x 43."

Artist statement: Great flocks of white pelicans arrive in April in the area where I live in south eastern Oregon. They remain to nest and then fly south in the fall. Heavy machine quilting with many colors of thread was done to enhance the design. The sky was painted, inks were used to shade the pelicans and each bird has over fifty pieces.
