Carousel Stampede (72" x 93") by Cathy Wiggins of Macon, NC was the winner of the Director's Award, sponsored by Superior Threads, at the 2013 Road to California Quilter's Conference and Showcase. Take a closer look at the detailed painting and quilting, which horse would you choose to ride?
Artist Statement: When I was young, it was always a big decision as to which horse to ride on the carousel. Which one of these beautiful horses would you ride? Beginning with white muslin, I base painted the background and horses using textile mediums followed by detailed shading with Shiva Paintstiks. It took about 300 hours of painting, 250 hours of quilting and another 40 hours or so of applying the 5000+ crystals.
