Last fall I ran into quilt teacher, author, and all aournd good gal, Bonnie McCaffery at the Houston International Airport. We were both pooped out tired after market / festival and were glad to see a friend. We sat and chatted for a few minutes and decided to sieze the moment and "put down" a vid cast. Please visit Bonnies site to check it out. We really did have fun!

126_144571.jpg As the first taping date rolls around the corner, I realized you probably don't know some of the really cool stuff about the folks working behind the scenes. You might think it is just Ricky and myself with a video camera, but "no way baby!" Let me give you a heads up of who's who. First off, you might have seen ARJJ on your credit card when you became a gold star member, it is our corporation name (Alex, Ricky, Justin and John). Right off the bat, we enlisted the talents of three outstanding webmasters, Paul, Bob and Seth, each with their own specialty. Regarding the World Quilt Community, Toi has joined us as News Editor.

Our first producer actually worked at HGTV as my boss! She left the network about a year before I did. Angel moved on to Turner broadcasting and currently is taking a new job at Cornell University. Angel coerced her friend Bev who has been in TV industry for decades to be co producer (www.berverlyprice.com). Bev was especially interested in the concept of internet TV and wanted the opportunity to work in broadband media (new stuff!). Beverly in turn talked Ryan into joining the team as key editor. Ryan just got back from working on the Super Bowl. From Boulder we welcome Day Light Productions and their crew who will wave the magic wand to bring our show to you.

Of course, we welcome all the quilters and industry leaders who are flying in from around the world to strut their stuff! It has been wonderful to watch how the professional quilting industry has embraced our vision, helping make our dream a reality.

Last but not least, it comes down to you! Without YOUR support and partnership, it would be in vain, right? The beauty of this internet TV venture is that we are not under the thumb of a network’s idea of who we are and what we want. We, the quilters control it! All in all, this couldn’t have happened at a better time. We at ARJJ are thrilled with how The Quilt Show is shaping up and are honored to serve our community. So, help us spread the word and let the New Day Begin!

Often I refer to quilting as “a preferred sport”, after all we often gather as if the super bowl was around the corner (wait, maybe it is? - like TODAY!). Today on Oahu, John and I saw what could be the next level of extreme, when the word is Sports. Winds were wicked and the surf was up! Fifty a mile winds kept many indoors, but not these brave folks. The waves were 16 feet high (although they looked much higher to me) and the winds were blowing off shore. It looked like someone dumped dry ice into the ocean. One camera person said these conditions only occurred about three times a year. What we shortly realized was that we were watching the pros have at it. Both surfers and windsurfers were taking advantage of the situation. In fact, as we surveyed the situation, many camera people were there taking “movie – b roll”. WOW! It was fun and exhilarating to watch, but I think I prefer quilting as my sport of choice.

Now, why didn't I think of this?Surprised

Singer Sewing Manual from 1949.

"Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do...never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates.

Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing....

When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals.

Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on....[If] you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should."

We are having a blast in HI, shifting from Island to Island. Perhaps the most stunning view was last night from our stateroom. On the big Island a recent earthquake opened up lava flow. The color was spectacular as the lava flowed off the side of the island into the ocean. When it hit the water, steam rose into the night air. In addition, it released a smell we could detect from the ship. Wow! Mother nature at her best!

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to go to Road to Ca. quilt show in southern Ca. It is always fun to attend these events because not only do I get to see good friends, but many times meet new friends. There never seems to be enough time at these venues. At this particular conference I had the pleasure to see the fruit of a quilt teacher's job. In my morning class, she brought several of her students and they showed me their quilts from my book Keep Quilting. In addition, the night before, a young lady came up and purchased her first quilt book, she was inspired to start quilting. The best part of my job? YOU! I can speak for all teachers, we love seeing and hearing where you are in your quilt journey.

In preparation for our Quilt HI cruise I was warned, "you know it is winter in HI right now". As I was rummaging through my closet for summer attire, I kept thinking, but she said it is winter! Sand between the toes, sunscreen on and boats bobbing in the ocean, if this is winter i'll take it! If you think cruising is an idea for you please visit www.quiltcelebration.com for information about future adventures.

John said, that if there ever was a cat that used product, it would be our Sparrow. I mean really, just check out her eyeliner (este lauder - black). We marvel at our attraction to this creature and realize that we are getting old, if a CAT can hold our attention so intensely. Although Mom knows a lady who hires a babysitter when they go out to dinner for their rabbit! As I mentioned earlier, she is allowed to sleep with us, but John said he draws the line at serving her breakfast in bed. He also commented that he was sure he heard her snapping her fingers for us this morning.85_653057.jpg

84_874269.jpg I am packing like a mad man, getting ready for our Quilt Celebration Cruise. We set sail Monday and return the following Monday (oh the perks of this job – it’s tough but someone has to do it). I am going a few days early so I can visit my friend Raza at Bernina HI. If you happen to be in the area on Saturday I will present a trunk show (via the magic of Power Point) which chronicles the path of my quilt journey. It is a lot of fun. From Quilting mom to TV host, who would have guessed? (I wonder if Joen is up for tubing the gutter again?)

The other night I popped into chat unannounced. Quickly into the “conversation” we realized we had a winner amongst us. Ellie, her screen name, (Jane Zowacki in real life) won second place in the Northcott challenge. The prize was/is 800-900 fat quarters (every fabric they manufactured last year) and she was anticipating their arrival. Jane stole my heart when she said it was like waiting for Christmas morning and that she might roll in them when they arrive. Very Funny! Anyway, I hounded her to post the quilt in her “my space area” on our site. She complied and now it is yours to see. Oh yes, if you get The Quilter Magazine, it is in this month's issue (March). Kudos Jane, and you were right, your incognito status has been busted. Thanks Northcott for the image, and to see the other winners please visit www.northcott.net. It is pretty impressive work!
