As we continue our focus on organization, we can't let you miss out on these great tips from the queen of Uber-organization, Libby Lehman. These solid tips help to make her small (14' x 14'), upstairs (converted) bedroom seem large and super efficient.

1. Keep a unified color scheme for all major elements (walls, carpet, window coverings, basket systems, etc.). Introduce color with specific items in limited areas only. This unified look keeps the space from becoming too distracting.

2. Keep most of your organizational items (wire baskets, shelving, tables, etc.) white so that everything mixes well, regardless of manufacturer.

3. Use your vertical space to keep items within reach, but off floor and table surfaces.

4. Look for great organizational tools for your sewing room--for example bamboo drawer organizers--at office- and kitchen-supply stores.

5. When you like an item, stock up by buying five or six.The next time you go, they probably won't have it. (Exception: see item 8.)

6. When you go to the store, bring measurements for the space that you're organizing. Nothing is more frustrating that bringing an item home only to find that it's 1/2" too big.

7. When shopping for a container to hold thread or bobbins, bring along a spool or bobbin. (See item 4.)

8.  When you find a greeting card that you like, buy just one. You won't need to remember whether you've sent the same card to the same person twice!

9. Try this Libby-recommended guide for great organizational tips: Organizing for the Creative Person:  Right-Brain Styles for Conquering Clutter, Mastering Time, and Reaching Your Goals.

10. Label everything to save time, energy, and frustration. (Libby claims she couldn't live without her label maker!)

PDFs for Laura Nownes Contemporary Quilt Sampler, Lesson 4 - Sawtooth Star, have a cutting error.  If you have already downloaded the files, the star points should be cut 2-3/8" and NOT 2-7/8". These pieces are cut to the exact needed size.

A corrected pdf will be available shortly. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Several times a year, Ricky offers five-day, independent study retreats to small groups of ten students at the Tims Art Quilt Retreat Center in La Veta, CO. The retreat is designed to cultivate self-expression through the medium of quilt-making. Introspective morning talks, journaling and creative assignments are the foundations on which students pursue outward creative expression. The independent study format enables Ricky to guide each person toward their own personal goals for the week. Quilters of all experience levels are welcome to attend.

Available dates for 2013:
Winter Wonderland - Jan 7-12 (Dye Class 6-7)
Spring Fling - Mar 18-23

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a movement known as the Colonial Revival swept across the United States. The movement, with its glorification of America's national past, affected everything from architecture and furniture styles to household items such as silver and textiles.

Americans faced with the complexities of modern-day life embraced the idea of a simpler, nobler past. "Perfecting the Past: The Colonial Revival and Quilts" looks at the impact the movement has had on American quilts and quiltmakers. Quilts on display show how the movement affected pattern, color, and style choice, and the impact in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  This remarkable exhibit on view at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum will run from December 7, 2012-September 1, 2013.

5006_rickysstudio.jpgIt's school supply shopping time for students around the country.  Why not use this 'bargain pricing' opportunity to get your quilt studio in shape. Over the next few weeks TQS will share some clever ideas using office supply and hardware items that will help take control of your studio chaos.

Tip of the Week: Three ring binders & sheet protectors

Use a three ring binder with sheet protectors to corral a whole host of stray papers.  Super organized quilter Emily Meier uses individual notebooks to catalog design ideas and information about each quilt that she has made.
Each notebook has a purpose and can easily be stored on a shelf.

5006_img_2286.jpg  5006_img_2282.jpg

Notebook 1 (Quilt Journal)
*List pattern name and any other vital information (such as size, batting used, etc.).
*Clip and paste fabric used in quilt.
*Insert drawing or illustration of completed quilt.
*Keeping a record helps when someone asks what pattern she used.

5006_img_2284.jpg  5006_img_2293.jpg

Notebook 2 (Book of Inspiration)
*Clip and insert quilt inspiration ideas into the sleeve.  Emily loved the pattern from a magazine.  She also included colored fabric swatch ideas for the quilt she wanted to make.  On the right is the completed quilt.
*Items such as greeting cards, napkins, magazine advertisements and wrapping paper can be inspirational ideas for future projects.
