It's getting to be that time again! The International Quilt Festival in Houston is just around the corner, and we wanted to share some other fantastic things to do while you're in town for the show.
- Historic Texas Homes at Sam Houston Park : The Heritage Society's museum complex is nestled in a 10-acre, parklike setting just a short walk from the Convention Center. The complex includes ten historic Houston-area structures dating from 1823-1905.
- Bayou Bend: This 1920s-era mansion in the River Oaks neighborhood houses one of this country's most significant collections of American decorative arts. Bayou Bend is the former home of philanthropist and Houston native, Ima Hogg. While you're there, don't miss the 14 acres of organically maintained, historic Southern Renaissance gardens.
- Montrose Shopping District: Meander along lower Westheimer and you'll soon discover a collection of offbeat and amazing boutiques that offer everything from vintage cowboy boots to up-to-the-minute designer duds. Lots of fun little eateries and coffee bars, too.
- High Fashion Fabrics: If you're looking for a place that offers dressmaking as well as quilting fabric, High Fashion Fabrics just might fit the bill. For 25 years, this enormous local business has been offering everything from beaded couture to leather, silk, linen, cotton, and knits to Houston's sewing culture.
- High Fashion Home: If shopping at High Fashion Fabrics doesn't wear you out, cross the street and venture into the four-story (125,000-sq. foot) home-furnishings emporium, High Fashion Home. It's a sanctuary of inspired choice for the eclectic, modern lifestyle. Explore a mix of exclusive furniture, fabrics, drapery, and home accessories from around the world.
- Houston Space Center: Learn all there is to know about space and the technology that was and is being designed for travel to another galaxy at the Houston Space Center.
- Phoenicia: This specialty foods store, only a few blocks from the convention center, carries more than 15,000 products with down-to-earth pricing from more than 50 countries. Fresh-baked artisan breads, European pastries, boutique wines and beers, quality meats and cheeses, fresh seafood and meat, hot grille items, catering, prepared foods, exotic produce and houseware. 1001 Austin Street.
