The world has watched in horror at the events that have unfolded in Haiti over the past 10 days. Our hearts go out to those who are experiencing suffering and loss. TQS has received queries about what our community can do. The big question is, "What can we do?"
The directors of ARJJ have had several discussions to determine the best course of action. We had to face the reality that we are not in the best position to implement and manage a relief project. One suggestion was to collect quilts and send them. But right now, what is needed for relief in Haiti is money. A quilt collection effort would presently lead to crates sitting at the airport taking up space for much needed supplies. By giving money, the organizations who are there actually meeting the needs of the people can more wisely obtain the most necessary items. If covers are needed, they can get them. We know quilts are beautiful and comforting, but in a topical country, they may not be the most practical item - especially right now.
We also feel that the money should go quickly and directly to reputable relief organizations. We encourage you to send money now - directly to reputable organizations. We would very much appreciate your comment telling us the organization you give to - and why. Your post will provide a much-needed reference for those seeking a place to give knowing it is being directed to those in need and not being misdirected. No need to state how much you give - just give - and tell us to what organization you gave to.
