You might remember that Shelly and Joey were a bit worn out when asked to pick a winner for the TQS Baby Quilt contest, now, after a bit of sleep, they have chosen their favorite. They choose the winner because they felt it looked like a nice warm hug.

With over 150 quilts submitted for our TQS Baby Quilt Contest, Capt. John and Alex were overwhelmed with the variety and creative ideas shared by our talented TQS members. The choices were too much for these newbie grandparents to handled, so they thought it would be fun to let the new parents, Joey and Shelly, make the selections.

Well...little did Alex and John foresee the firestorm of frantic phone calls that would ensue. "Mom, you have NO idea how exhausted Shelly and I are, what with Lev keeping the two of us awake at all hours. We are just exhausted. You've forgotten what it's like."

So, we ask your forgiveness for not having the winners ready to announce as promised. Seems we need to give the new parents a few more days to decide which of these uber-cute quilts will win. We know you'll understand.

In the meantime, if you haven't yet viewed the entries, check out the adorable quilts in Show and Tell.  4696_see_the_quilts_0.png

Quilt-maker, teacher, and author Pepper Cory began her journey into quilting as a college student, with the yard-sale purchase of a handmade quilt. In this episode, Pepper joins us for a delightful show and tell, and to share the history and "how-to's" of the classic Japanese stitching technique called sashiko.

She also presents vintage and contemporary examples of a traditional pattern from the Isle of Man that she refers to as "the original quilt-as-you-go" block, and demonstrates its assembly with a simple running stitch.

Finally, Ricky provides the evocative musical background for a tour of the day's location, the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe, NM.

From Karen Combs:

On March 16, 2012, sometime between midnight and 6am at the Courtyard New Braunfels River Village, my rental car's driver window was broken and my teaching suitcase was stolen. The hotel is located at 750 IH 35 North in New Braunfels, Texas. The police were called, they stated the break-in looked like the work of a professional.

It was a "smash and grab". The vandals did not know what they were taking and it will have no value to them. It means the world to me. . .

Inside the suitcase were the quilts from my popular Patchwork Illusions class. I also lost all my teaching supplies and step-by-step demos for the class.

If you live in New Braunfels or anywhere in Texas, please check local yard sales, flea markets and pawn shops for the quilts. Everyone, please forward this blog posting to every quilter and quilt shop you know and ask them to forward it to everyone they know.

If you find one of my quilts or quilt blocks, please contact me at karen@karencombs.com.

Gammill Quilt artist and long-arm machine specialist Linda Thielfoldt talks about her roots - her mom was an excellent garment maker - and brings a touch of humor to show and tell.
You'll be amazed by her easy and efficient method for stitching "mock feathers" (no backtracking!) on a long-arm sewing machine, and her helpful tips for preparing to quilt fabric for use in a garment, selecting (and reading) a suitable pattern, and achieving the perfect fit. Watch...and then wear!

It's another fabulous "twofer" show! First, award-winning machine quilter, Gammill spokesperson, author, and teacher Gina Perkes demonstrates how you can appliqué and quilt at the same time on the long-arm machine...and add a little "dazzle" from the bobbin as well. Then quilt artist, author, designer, and (fast-talking) teacher Pat Yamin visits the set, showing some of her quilts and divulging her brush with Hollywood fame. She also shows how to use templates to quickly and accurately cut and piece a two-patch pattern, using Robbing Peter to Pay Paul as an example. You'll pick up tons of tips on this info-packed episode.

Yes, you can do it! Artist, teacher, and author Nancy Prince taught herself to "paint" with thread, and now she shares her "secrets."

Discover how to create an off-the-quilt thread painting: what stitches to use, how to size them, shade them, highlight and blend them.

With Nancy's guidance, learn to "pump up" a commercially printed fabric with thread and how to use your computer to convert a personal photo into a pattern.

Ricky concludes by sharing a video about the Colorado Quilt Council and the benefits of a state guild. Don't miss a minute!

As a child, quilt designer, teacher, and author RaNae Merrill spent hours doodling on her favorite toy, a Kenner Spirograph. Obviously time well spent; nowadays, she begins each new quilt with a series of doodles and sketches. Join us on location at the Onaledge B and B and Rockledge Country Inn (Manitou Springs, CO), where she shows a sampling of her signature spiral and mandala quilts, and then shares her design process and unique foundation-piecing method.

For the grand finale, RaNae, an accomplished pianist, treats us to a selection by J. S. Bach, and innkeeper Maureen Hance conducts a tour of the circa-1890 Rockledge Country Inn.
